Just put a bid in for a gentleman that is renting an apartment and would like surround installed. Options were limited but I was able to get speaker wire into the ceiling for surround speakers. The problem is that the ceiling is an open truss system with NO insulation at all. What woud be the best way to dampen these speakers so he doesn't disturb his neighbors above him? Dynamat? Please help because I'm ready for this one to be over with.

I'd fish down the walls, and use speakers on floor stands if possible.

He's renting an apartment and he is allowed to put in inwalls? The best thing would be to use an enclosed speaker like a Triad or something similar and put in a good insulation blanket over the top.

Ditto what cma has stated. The Triads are so well built, there is almost no sound coming out of the rear of the enclosure.

Use a in-wall manufacturer that has back boxes (for sound damping and/or fire purposes)

TRIADS WILL WORK, BUT CONSIDER IN WALLS IF IT IS POSSIBLE.

Before doing any cutting, I would check with local building codes. If the wall in the apatrment is common with another unit, it's considered a party wall, and must have a 2 hour fire rating (at least here anyway). I imagine you may run into a similar situation in teh ceiling. If that's not the case, I would only use Triads.

All joking aside I'd use a low profile surface mount to minimize any problems with isolation.
