F the IPod, if you want more bang for the buck and not have to put up with ITunes songs that can only be played on the IPod then get this: [Link: samsung.com]It is generally always on sale for less than the comparable IPod, and has better battery life. Tweenage son to mother: "But Maaaaaaaaa-oooooooooom, I said 'get me an iPod', not this piece of s**t Samsung. It has to be an iPod. My friends will make fun of me. Oh god, I can never leave the house again!"

Ed, you clearly are the most theatrical guy on this site and you bring a boatload of knowledge to the table. Having said that, I am sure you know that unless you are listening to vinyl or reel to reel tape, you have compressed music, even on your precious ADA stuff. Apple lossless connected via digital out to you system is DAMN good. It realy comes down to everyone's own ears, but then again you know that. why do i feel like i have just been ripped? ed

Ed will be known as the Tiger Woods of the integration business, followed closely with the renaming of his company to "Hotties A/V". The tag line will be "We like big racks and tight holes"... |

I think Neil Young said it best, "LPs sound much better than CDs, and anyone with a $15,000 stereo system can hear the difference"

The RIAA curve is compression? Or is it equalization/compensation? So when we grow old and our hearing goes is that compression or does that only happen to our spines?

So, then, if a client wants to incorporate their 500 disc collection that is now on a HDD, accessed with iTunes, into a music server, what is the answer to avoid the compression and something sounding like "ass?" Re-rip the media, again compressed, into another server? The dac's in an iPod are certainly not comparable to high-end equipment, but digital out using iTunes with lossless encoding is pretty good. Ed, I am not trying to rip you. I really respect your opinions here. Couldn't agree more with you on almost all your posts. I thougt the thick skin thing here still applied. :)

There must be something wrong with my 3rd generation 40 gig iPod. The thing is that even through the HEADPHONE output connected to just about any system I hook it to, the AAC320 encoded music I have in there sounds pretty great. I have serious doubts that any of you who are ripping the iPod apart have actually listened to one with this type of music file. I guarantee that you would be humbled if you were to do a blind comparison between the iPod and a low end CD player. The difference is not quite as great as you make it out to be.
The one thing a person can pretty much always count on in our industry is an abundance of opinionated and undereducated misinformation being spread around to build the credibility of the person spewing it.

It has something intangible. That post said it all davidcasemore.

You can easily hear the inferior sound quality of an iPod through any mid fi system. The appeal of an iPod has nothing to do with sound quality. As an analogy, I like to listen to tunes in my car and there are always deficiencies in car audio. I just like the experience.

I agree, and like I said... "I take it all back" The damn little thing sounded pretty good on her Martin Logans with REL subwoofer... If that is what ass sounds like... well I dunno what to say. And yes I was one of those opinionated bigots who was critcal of the IPOD, until I gave it a good listening to last night. I seriously was so amazed, that I'm sh#t - canning my CD's and 100 disc Marantz changer! I'm a crow-eating convert!

O.K. I've been a little harsh on guys posting about using their IPODS... I have to admit it is a truely amazing device! I think I'll get one tomorrow! What'll they be able to make them do next??? You've been complaining about them and have never used or listened to compressed audio!!! I was just starting to think that I had judged you wrongly. I'd been blinded by the poor spelling, reply's multiple times without a single typed word, off topic rambling. Now I know you'll give your opinion about things you've never experienced, and know nothing of. The worst part of this is that you're so dumb as to advertise this to the entire website!

OK I have had enough, it is not about the compressed audio, there have been devices like this on the market for freakin years for much less, if you have not researched them I will forward links, iPod is the only one who advertised so much they got all the aftermarket crowd developing products for them. Just goes to show how gulable and ignorant our client base is.

A couple of years ago I displayed at the New York HE Show (Audiophiles) with Parasound (C1/JC1-2 ea/A51) and Bohlender/Graebener (R52-4 ea, Center/210 sub) using a Pioneer entry level DVD/SACD/DVD-Audio player. The second day I came in early to get the room squared away and playing a CD thaat I had made thatr AM on Music Match (128k rate I think). As I was cleaning people started to come in. By about the 4th or 5th song the room was full and everyone appeared to be enjoying themselves, I decided to take this oppertunity to promote the rooms product. I started by describing the Parasound units and the BG speakers. I finished up with " and the source that you listening too is the Pioneer $150. no excuse me $125. open box DVD player from Circuit playing an MP3 CD that I made this morning". Two guys in the front row got up (in somewhat of a huff) and stomped out, one of them saying something about me trying to make fools out of them. At that point I became pretty much convinced that without true side by side comparison most people are very happy with just about any decent sound (even the Golden Ears). Richard Schramm (Parasound) and Fred Yando (B/G) had walked in just as this happened when the room cleared about 15 minutes later Fred was still laughing about it. Freds the guy that ran the true ABX amp tests in the late 80s, early 90s when he ran Kef that proved that even the high end Amp designers could not pick their own product out when compared to a decent receiver played at the same level. In fact I think that the only reason he likes me is that I have a strong contemp for cable snake oil.

You've been complaining about them and have never used or listened to compressed audio!!! No I didn't say I.ve never listened to compressed audio... I listen to it all the time. I just never really sat down and listened to an IPOD with music I know really well, on a fairly high-end speaker system. We work with a few different hard drives out there... And I borrow my son's PS2 and listen to music downloads on it. I was just starting to think that I had judged you wrongly. I'd been blinded by the poor spelling, reply's multiple times without a single typed word, off topic rambling. Now I know you'll give your opinion about things you've never experienced, and know nothing of. D-head... who said I've never experienced --- Oh christ, what's the use! You are a nutcase! Did you wake up on the wrong side of the bed this morning? I can give you an opinion about what I think of your arrogance & cheap shots! Poor spelling, rambling, off topic???? That sums just about all of us up here from time to time. BCF1 then states: The worst part of this isthat you're so dumb as to advertise this to the entire website! Correction, the worst part of this is your negatvity... I think maybe a good enema might help you out a little. "Advertise"? Sorry son, I'm selling anythng! Excuse me for being able to admit that it has taken me a while to have an open mind about these little devices, and start taking them more seriously. Just putting my honest opinion out there. .
