O.K. I've been a little harsh on guys posting about using their IPODS... Well, tonight my friend brought home a new IPOD, and she was all excited.... I started being Mr. Audiophile... critcizing it for it's compressed audio etc.. the usual blah blah blah.

But then she sat me down at the computer and showed me all of the ITunes stuff, programming capabilities and then showed me how to sync-up her outlook on the thing, showed me a bunch of digital pics on it... and all kinds of other stuff! I have to admit it is a truely amazing device! I think I'll get one tomorrow! What'll they be able to make them do next???

Then she whipped out this little remote control (RF) and was controlling it from the front yard... the remote cost a whole $15!!!

next big thing is video...

with existing technology you can rip DVDs, record shows, even HD, and downsample the steam to a very compact MPEG4 stream optimized for the iPod's screen resolution. very soon Apple is likely to release an "iPod" especially for video. this will likey coincide with their newly patented multi-touchscreen technology. with the archival of DVD library type material, recording of broadcast TV, free download and Podcasts, and purchase of video or music videos from their store, I think we will see a big boom in this area (video).

I love my iPod. I've got the Big Lebowski and other movies on it, More songs than I can keep track of, my address book and appointments.

Its a great piece of work. I just wished I wouldn't have left it out in the rain the other night.
Gunga.....Gunga....GU-Lunga

And since Ernie won't keep count, I will. Hes up to 249, and counting.

ipods are good, just sound like ass on a good sound system

Ed, you clearly are the most theatrical guy on this site and you bring a boatload of knowledge to the table. Having said that, I am sure you know that unless you are listening to vinyl or reel to reel tape, you have compressed music, even on your precious ADA stuff. Apple lossless connected via digital out to you system is DAMN good. It realy comes down to everyone's own ears, but then again you know that.

If you are talking about uncompressed, you are basically saying "unlimited dynamic range".
Your turntable is compressed. Ever heard of an RIAA curve? If it was uncompressed you would likely have 90 db dynamic range and could get above the noise floor, which by and large you cannot on LPs.
Reel to reel? The inability of magnetic tape to record linearly without distortion is a strike against it. Add to that the fact that to get, again, full dynamic range out of it, well it can't be done. Higher levels and especially high frequencies combined with the injected bias frequency saturate the tape head and actually reduce the amplitude of the signal recorded on the tape.
Bad examples of uncompressed music, unless you are perhaps talking a studio 1/2" or better tape machine at 30ips minimum. I assumed you are talking consumer gear.

How many clients do their iPods that way? I think copying compressed is what the majority does - thus the complaints you read.
There is no truth anymore. Only assertions. The internet world has no interest in truth, only vindication for preconceived assumptions.

even though the iPod can play back high bit rate or lossless codecs, it still has a 2 cent DAC and poor analog output circuitry. when I say poor, I mean compared to hi end gear. great for headphone use and even for typical low end in wall/ceiling speakers.

iTunes client running a real sound card or digital, now that's another story.

Here is another link to the multi-link touch screen technology. This is not the first patent filed, but an additional one.

like any of these rumors, they mean absolutely nothing until Apple announces it, but there seems to be plenty of people watching closely that seem to have good reason to believe that this is Apples next tract.

Exactly, my point being that most everything we as consumers have is somehow compressed. Yes on the 1/2" tape, that is what I was referring to. With some type of lossless coding, bit for bit transfer can come so close that our ears have a tough time noticing. If you sit in front of Wilson Audio bi-amped with Pass Lab, Mac, Krell, Threshold, etc. I would expect to notice. But how many of us have that setup?

Besides the RIAA curve on the turntable Analogue Tape compression can be a blessing or a curse depending upon the gear and engineer. There is only one type of uncompressed music that I know of.

Live Music. Anybody remember that?

Now THERE is a cute Freudian slip. iPod outputs are a streaming pile.

As ed says, listen on a decent hi fi system and you will hear how bad they are.

Good for Apple is the fact that about fifteen years of kids have grown up with little plastic blobs sitting next to their computers, and those things are called loudspeakers. Or, to put it the way I originally typoed it, louspeakers. And those sometimes have horrible subwoofers.

Did it ever occur to you that one reason Bose is thought of so highly is that Bose sounds better than computer speakers, which are the de facto speaker systems that people listen to these days?
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

F the IPod, if you want more bang for the buck and not have to put up with ITunes songs that can only be played on the IPod then get this:

[Link: samsung.com]

It is generally always on sale for less than the comparable IPod, and has better battery life.

The problem with non-iPod MP3 players is that 3rd party support is limited, at best. If it wasn't for that, the Samsung would probably be a much better choice, as would other portable media players. Unfortunately, 3rd party support can make or break just about any platform out there.

This will probably also be proven by the HD-DVD vs. BluRay format war. It's not about which has better specs, but which gets the most support.

Thank you,
Damon DG
