The lady in the coffee shop yesterday morning had a really nice one. I'd love to sit on her lap while programming :-)

Just get one with a DB9 connection. If you ever get into any higher end stuff, some of it doesn't like the USB converters.

I use a Dell Latitude D810

If you want something without a DB9 then make sure it has a PCMCIA slot and get a serial card like those discussed in the other thread.

I like the silver ones--- The black ones are pretty cool too.

If you are a messy marvin, get the panasonic toughbook and beat the crap out of it...........

I have a larger 17 widescreen toshiba, think twice on this if you carry it on you for any length of time......(weight is larger than most)

I was in the same position a few months ago and I wanted a Toughbook, but it was out of my budget at the time. I found a Durabook which has a titanium case, spill-proof keyboard, locking DVD tray and is rated to withstand drops of about 30". It has been great. Also has serial port with is great for MX programming.

I purchaced it at Sams Club.com for $999 with the optional $79 3-year warranty. Three thumbs up!

Good Luck!

I got a lease return /refurb IBM on Ubid.com for like $450. works great. 2nd time I used it while programming mx-850 in a clients home I tripped over the power cord & launched it off from coffee table onto concrete floor! Case cracked, the two halves of the case came apart some. Snapped it back together, dusted it off & kept programming! It has an internal titanium chassis & it held up very well.
Life is short, enjoy yourself!

I have had most of the above mentioned .........except for the lady lap. I would recommend the Dell Precision series mobile workstations....can be pricey 2500+/- but I make aliving with mine and it is very solid. Plus when you step up to this level the service is top notch. I have guaranteed 1 min wait time to talk to a tech in TN.....not India. I also have gone through a keyboard and power supply both of which were next day aired to me free of charge with return postage included. They are great.......just make sure that you buy through their business channel.

The DB9 connection is more important than you can imagine.

Some software will work with some USB connectors and then it will not work with the next. B&K, Elan, Universal, Xantech, Niles, Russound and of cource some security panels.

The point is, sooner or later you will run into something different or new.

That DB9 serial port will be extremely important.

Dell Lattitude has one, but a tough book would be awesome.

Purchase XP PRO, or upgrade.

I think the techs in India speak better English then the ones in TN :p

Seriously though, I just bought an HP DV8110 from Circuit City. $1250 - $250 in rebates makes it an even grand. 17" screen, full-size keyboard, DVD burner, powerful processor, and LIGHT to boot! Also has room for a 2nd HDD, which I added a 100gig, giving me 180gigs of laptop goodness! Only drawback is no DB9, so I went USB adaptor. So far, it's (Belkin) playing nice with everything, but I'm not Crestron/AMX, so who knows....

Just my $.02 worth.
