Have a customer that we recently added a networkable printer to there network. ever since they claim the modem is dropping out or the internet doesnt work after they have turned the computers off and back on forcing them to reset the modem/router. I have checked the cables and connections and replaced the router. With the new router they say it improved and only happens after they turn their computers off at night and back on in the morning. Any Ideas? I have been there a few times and of course it works when I am there.

Well I would try setting all the PC's and the Printer to static IP's and see if that helps. It may be a problem With the DHCP server in the router. It sounds Like the PC's Are not renewing their IPs.

Can't help except to say that the network printer was the best thing I ever did here at home... So nice not to have to go boot up the old computer upstairs and wait for it to get going before printing every time... Doesn't seem to affect the network at all...

Good luck,

Norm

Static the Printer Only. Don't Static the PCs. Make sure that the Printer is outside the address range but has proper Gateway and Subnet. Had a similar issue once and this took care of it.

I've been running network printers for years with basic consumer quality linksys routers, never had a problem. The printer is an HP LaserJet with internal printer server though. perhaps your printer server is crashing?

Go for a firmware update on the router. I had a similar problem when I used Comcasts walledgarden self provisioning utility. I only provision now using MAC id to a call center. They put up resistance but it can be done. I'm not sure if they have the kinks worked out of that self provisioning utility but avoid at all costs if possible.

Well I have tried everything and it is still happening. It seems they turn off the computers at night and when they turn them on in the AM is when they need to reset the system.

What router is it? Is it integrated router w/wireless? The reason I ask is I've blown through several routers with built-in wireless and those routers kept dropping the DHCP server functionality which would obviously be noted upon the next request for an IP address. (In other words, the following morning after boot.) My solution which has worked for over a year uninterrupted is to get a router with a separate wireless access point if wifi is needed. Hope that helps.

Is it a 802.11b or g router? The reason I asked is because I just had a customer tell me that when she is on her laptop she cannot use her 2.8 GHz cordless phone. We switched her out for a g router and everything worked fine.
Just my opinion, I could be wrong.
