In another thread, Phil wrote

""Thanks avdude...I found that I can also use the Denon AVR1803/3803 receiver which has an internal composite and s-video input converter to component out so I need only use one input on the TV....""

I downloaded the manual and could find nothing about this at all. Have any of you found that this or other Denons, or heck, ANY receivers, will convert video in ways that simply are not mentioned in the manuals?
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

straight from the Denon Web site: [Link: usa.denon.com]

AVR-3803
...... • 2 Assignable component video inputs (100MHz), with On-Screen Display • Video Conversion of Composite to S-Video and/or to Component, with on-screen display • 7 sets composite and "S" video inputs • ..........

I haven't seen one yet, I hope that it works well.
the 1803 dosen't say anything about it.

I tested the 3802 in the setup currently underway, and it did not convert the signal automatically; I see from Brent's response that the 3803 has a lot more thought going into component. That is a good thing.

We have tested the 3803 and it is does not do a good gob with 3/2 pulldown. The 5803 does a much finer job.

Do the Denon's really do 3/2 pull down? I thought it would just maintain the signal at 480i, But that would be nice if it kicks out a 480p. can anyone confirm this?

Brent, the 3803 will not do 3/2 pulldown because it does not do any up-conversion. The 3803 also does not pass through a 480p signal verry well (it sucks!). This feature was intended for switching simplification only. The 5803 has much cleaner component signal specs. The 5803 does a nice job passing through 480p with little artifacts. 3/2 pulldown is only an issue when scaling 480i to 480p through an external de-interlacer (DVDO) while using component video. The 3803 just introduces way to many artifacts (trailing edges, ect.) and I cannot speak for the 1803, but I would expect the same.

What does this meen to you?

If you want to do any scaling or de-interlacing you shouldn't be using an integrated processor's component switching. You should run the component video straight from the source to your scaling device. If you have a projection system or plasma system that comes with a controller, you will not need a progressive scan DVD player because the controller will up-convert an input signal to the display device's native resolution (480i to 1080p). This is where 3/2 pulldown comes into play.
