Is it true that Control 4 is selling to Circuit City?

They are selling to some Circuit City stores in Florida as a test. See Jim Gist's comments here.

Yikes. I'm feeling pretty happy now that I didn't buy into their Koolaid.

I would have thought that C4 would have opted for BB/Magnolia as they are obviously a much stronger retailer then the struggling CC.

What makes you think that they didn't try to get into BB first? You know you're in trouble when your product isnt good enough for BB. Maybe if they included Monster Cable interconnects..........

I think the whole thing is laughable and here are my personal reasons:

1) They can't get product shipped that was supposed to be available months ago but the V.P. of Corporate Sales has the time to spend anserwing questions on a forum primarily dedicated to the end user.

2) Their own forums are a joke and I haven't seen ANYONE from Control4 post there in ages, and this is answering the questions of the dealers that will make or break the product line.

3) I attempted to get some tech support on a Saturday - HA HA HA! I guess this automation stuff only breaks during the week and someone without a working system they just spent a chunk of money on is very patient and will happily wait until Monday to get it fixed. I guess I should only work M-F as well.

4) The wait time with Tech Support was about 5-10 mins when I first started calling. The wait times now regularly exceed 30 minutes but you don't have to wait on the weekends!

5) Initial order - 1 bad 6 button keypad, 2 button keypad, Home Theater Controller, and 5 minute battery for 10.5" Touch Panel. Did I mention I was in this house with this out of box equipment failure on a SATURDAY. I get the joy of paying to ship this defective gear back plus spending quality time listening to my wife break my balls because I took a full weekend day away from the family to essentially get nothing done.

6) My little system from my tiny 2 man company has these types of issues so I can only imagine the shit storm when a 400 + store chain starts slapping the gear in. Excuse me while I finish the one system I have in the field and step to the side and wait for the opportunity to partner with an AMX or Crestron. I guess that stupid saying "Go big or go home" has some merit.

I think I just broke my soapbox from jumping on it!
with all do respect... i had no idea that you had an experimental surgery to have your balls removed.

But Mike, just think of how much your business will expand once Circuit City helps expand market awareness for all the C4 dealers ;-) :-). Plus you may even be able to do setups for CC customers. What's wrong with you, you ungreatful guy? Could not resist ;-).

Q - I am speechless! After much thought I have learned what an ungreatful ass I am for trying to be above the level of the local big box giant. I shall submit my application to Walmart tomorrow to work in thier new custom install division created by the purchasing of a local CI firm.

Actually, I was thinking that it was just about time for a year end thread on that very same subject matter.

Just looked back at the "Anyone actually USE any Control4 yet?" thread

[Link: remotecentral.com]

Just to recap, here's a little smattering of posts from the 12 pages relating to distribution...

On April 24, 2005 at 12:27, Barry Shaw said...
On the marketing side, one of PHAST's many problems
was signing up *way* too many unqualified dealers.
I see Control4 going after the "mass" market in
a big way & doing the same. At least when I call
Crestron, I'm not on hold while the Tech fields
100 calls from "Wires-R-Us", chain-store salesmen
and even end-users.

My worst-case scenario is the products actually
*do* work, but are sold through every big-box
and DIY'er channel on the planet, with margins
& support to match.

Am I being realistic or pessimistic?

This isn't my 1st rodeo.

All those of you who are waiting for the product,
relax - It will be on the shelf at Tweeter, Best
Buy, Circuit City and even CompUSA before you
know it...
WooT!
Ohyeah, i Heard Control4 and Home Depot are going
to be sharing a both a CEDIA this year...

Somebody's Ouija Board is fully calibrated.

Ok, I just stopped laughing.

You forgot Sam's club and Costco too.

I'll get back to distribution in a second.
...
While our products aren't going to be sold into
Costco, Sam's Club or Depot we are selling to
Tweeter. This will only help you, the more exposure
the better.

Have a great weekend!

C4 can't be accused of sneaking up on you with the whole "market awareness" thing... and "Have a Great Weekend!" was nice touch.

Tell me again how selling to tweeter is going
to help the Custom Installer again? Last i looked,
i didnt see very many "Tweeters" listed in CEDIA
database of custom installers...

You're just not thinking outside the box here Mister Cranky Pants.

Guys, lets face it.
We're just a bunch of 'lab rats' until they(WE)
can perfect it, then they will sellout to the
Home Depo, Walmart,etc.

I'm quickly tiiring of this game!!!!!

Yah, I had a bad day!

Another glass-half-empty guy.

Jim, let me ask you something. And don't take
this the wrong way. But why, why the fauck is
the beer in Utah limited to 3.5%? Why do I need
to be "sponsored" to go to a bar and have a a
drink?

This has nothing to do with distribution - I just think Carl's a funny guy.

Same problem here. They have never called me,
after about 2 months now. They ARE good at actually
answering the phone when you call, but my rep
never calls me back. I DID get to speak with
him at CEDIA, and got the impression they dont
want to mess w small operations. 200 installs/year
seems to ring a bell as far as what theyre looking
for from a dealer. He made no apologies for partnering
up with Tweeter, or anyone else who would do numbers.
They WANT to be in the mass market, and appear
to have no desire to support the CI side of the
biz. all of this combined, has led me to not
pursue the line any longer. Ill probably go with
something like Homelogic in the near furure, even
though its not retrofit.

Nit-picker.

On September 19, 2005 at 21:24, Trip109 said...
After too many phone calls to the Control4 rep's
cell phone, several complaint phone calls to the
Control4 home office, emails etc ... I finally
got hold of my rep.

This guy was THE most arrogant sales rep I have
ever met. Within 3 minutes of being on the phone
with him he had informed me that:
1) There were "Many" dealers in my area interested
in his product line.
2) Our market was not large enough for him to
worry about until he got the other 20 markets
he manages in order.
3) "He" was looking for large, established operations
that could promote the Control4 product on a RETAIL
basis. OTC sales will be encouraged! Since we
don't have a showroom, he flat out told me I wouldn't
"have a prayer" of getting "[his] line".

"We have a new un-tested product line, but rather than internally debug it & roll it out slowly, lets ramp up the launch BIG! Lead, follow, whatever, but get out of my way!"

Just out of curiosity, would you be as enthusiastic
if BB/Magnolia were dealers?

A valid question.

Will, when and are is a little more accurate AHEM.

And a realistic answer. You guys are good.

To be fair, Jim Gist did say this was where they were headed... seems like this "test marketing" isn't suprising anybody.

Not that I would want this particular line anyway BUT I always come here first to see what the other guys/girls in my business who actually use this stuff think. I would never go buy what a rep tells me , he/she is paid by #s and needs them to keep the job!

The position vendors take on having exposure in a national chain as a good thing for the small independent is an old, old saw.

I told an old girlfriend once that my dating other women was good for her. It made me more worldly, gave me wider experience and deeper appreciation for women in general, and her in particular. As a result, I would be a better companion for her.

She didn't buy it, and neither do I.
Carpe diem!
