hey guys
i am doing a currently in the prewire phase of a pretty big job and i am wiring for russound uno-s2 keypads and greyfox cat5 intercoms in 13 areas. each unit fits in a 2 gang box and i wanna put the keypad and intercom into one 4 gang box so it will all fit behind one plate when we trim it out. i need to know if anyone has seen a 4 gang plate with2 decora openings and one double sized opening.
thanks in advance
matt

I am not sure about that. However, if you feel comfortable enough you could cut one side out and shave it until it's smooth. But of course I would do this before you get into the finaly phase of it just incase your unable to "make" the plate yourself.

Go shopping at a specalty electical shop in your area and ask them. You might have to go to a few of them. If there are none, call an electrican.

ain't no such animal - i would suggest a 'dry run' first. attempt to install the stuffinto a 4g box at your shop then customize a 4g plate. dont let your customer be the ginney(sp) pig because if it doesnt work youll look awefully dumb when they have to patch the wall

Those 2 devices rarely go in the wall at the same height.

Usually, the audio KPs go in at switch height, and the intercoms are located at the same height as t-stats and alarm keypads.

So are you mounting the keypad higher than normal, or the intercom lower than normal??

I would do two 2 gang boxes in the same cavity with the intercom above the audio KP and line 'em up vertically.

rick,
i usually do install keypads at switch height, but the homeowner would prefer the pads to be more eye level so they dont have to look down at the pad. i actually had to agree with the customer for once

I would suggest using the Pass and Seymour plates to try and cut, as they are less brittle than most others.
I may be schizophrenic, but at least I have each other.

You will be covered in white debris :)

Also try scoring it over and over with a razor knife and a straight edge. You can clean up with a sanding block.

I had to do this for two Casa keypads in one wall plate a few years back, and boy was it fun... It did work, however... If they make the nylon 'unbreakable' plates in a four-gang, you'll have no problem, but I've never seen that animal...

Hey, it's his house right!!

Anyway, I agree with Norm about the nylon plates, but I cant recall a 4 gang blank either...

Will the 4 gang Decora plate work if you hog out the area between the Decora openings?? If so, that opens more possibilities.

Lutron Claro plates are not brittle at all, and are even more flexible than the nylon plates. I would bet that they would be pretty safe to grind on with a Dremel bit.

Other than lining up with switch plates, why would you put an audio KP at sw plate height? Why not put it up at eye level?
There is no truth anymore. Only assertions. The internet world has no interest in truth, only vindication for preconceived assumptions.

Isn't the russound UnoS2 keypad a non standard 2 gang decora hole already? If so, I think its going to be more trouble than just cutting out the middle of two single gang holes.

http://www.dale-electric.com carries 4-gang blank plates. Home Depot, Lowes, or Graybar might also be able to order them for you...

1. The UNO keypads fit perfectly if you take out the spacer between the two openings.

I've done this many, many times (the goal is usually midsize plates, or ganged devices, or both).

2. Why put the keypad down at switch level?

Estetics mainly. It just looks cleaner. Same as using a keypad instead of multiple light switches.

3. My big question here is why use the GreyFox intercom? The failure rate is horrendous. Not a product a REAL pro should be using, in my opinion.

Funny, I realized this AM I need to do this exact same thing (well, put the UNO-S2 in a 3x gang box, next to a light switch, but more or less the same) and was unable to recall ever seeing a triple-gang faceplate with standard decora opening on one side and double on the other.

Was unsure, too, whether just "joining" two openings on one side would fit the UNO-S2, but was glad to read Trunk-Slammer -Supreme's confirmation that it does. Thanks, folks!
