I have a customer asking about the new i-Command system from Rotel for Whole House Audio distribution. Has anyone installed this new system yet? I'm curious about the ability to Customize the Touchscreen Remote and if the Remote Wall Kaypads will run a HTPC/Media server.

I posted in another area and had not found anyone with hands-on experience so I thought I would try here.

Thank You.

I have been trying to interview dealers for a story on i-command, because I've seen the system on many occasions and like it a lot. The IP "glue" in the system is the same that drives Lutron and HOneywell (security, HVAC), so you can integrate them seamlessly in an integrated Web GUI.

I have the name of a dealer who apparently vouches for the stuff, but he hasn't return my calls. Theaterguy, if you contact me directly, I will give you that contact info. ([email protected]).

They came in to show it to us (we are already B&W/Rotel/Classe dealers, so it would make sense), and I thought it looked cool, but when I asked about support for other brands, the guy started choking up. We have called a couple of other dealers, and the consensus seems to be...

If you are using Classe and Rotel... It works great!
If you are trying to control other things... wait a while...

The literature says that they have a huge database of all the controls for many other manufacturers, sounds like maybe they stretched the size of that database a bit in the marketing department.

Did they show you anything about the customization of the touchscreen using any type of ProntoEdit/Wizz.It like software?

Thanks...Marty

I'm not 100% on this... we didn't work on a PC or anything, just a binder and a pitch, but I think he said for now, no customization of screens - other than button labels. But I think he said they're working on it... Same with support for discrete codes...

If I get a minute, I'll check the binder...

I had one of their remotes in my shop for a while. I wasn't all that impressed with it. The tech support (or lack there of) was one of the main reasons that I sent it back before getting to deep into it... that and the announcement that RTI was bringing the T3 and others to market. I spoke to their "Tech guy" on several occasions, and I always felt like he was just reading from his computer screen... not giving me real world advice/answers. Not to mention that he kept telling me that he would send me a bunch of files and never did.

We are a HUGE B&W dealer, sell a fair amount of Rotel and Class'e Audio... the i-command is their weakest link.
