I probably do 5 or 10 Roku for each Apple TV that gets installed. Sometimes Roku throws the code up that the HDMI cable is not correct and to unplug it and plug it in again. Apple TV seems to give more black screens, and unplugging the HDMI seems to fix it.

These systems are probably half of the time going through an AVR, and the other half of the time directly to the television.

What are your experiences?
There is no truth anymore. Only assertions. The internet world has no interest in truth, only vindication for preconceived assumptions.

More problems with Roku.

We probably install an equal amount of Roku and Apple TV units.

We definitely see more Roku problems including:

Thermal warning

HDMP error

The old lock-up

Can I ask which Roku units you are having problems with?
Because the thermal warnings & locking up were almost exclusive with the sticks. And I have NEVER recommend someone using a stick (no matter what service it is). Just a terrible idea IMO.

I have always used the Ultra's and the Express. Rarely ever have any problems. And not near as many problems as Apple has given.

I'm with you on sticks. We never use them.

The Roku Premiere and Express units frequently spit out the thermal warnings for us. Of course we aren't doing things like sticking them to a boiling Eero unit, attaching them above heat sinks on receivers, etc.

The only Apple issues we have really seen (aside from the occasional lock-up) is trying to install new units on old components or with old cables. We have had to change to new HDMI cables in many legacy installations.

Roku sticks are for the consumers that don't mind having to "eff" with their stuff from time to time to stream a show. Most of your less expensive retail stuff is that way, and I refuse to sell it.

I'll only sell the Ultra, and have very few issues with them.

I have two Roku Premier and have never seen any thermal warning.

Are yours the older 4620/4630 models or the smaller 3920/3921 premiere/premiere+?

Ultras only on my end and never have a problem with them. Streaming services do occasionally have issues, but just on a single streaming service, do to updates or whatever.

I keep having hdcp issues with roku. Rebooting it fixes it.

On Apple TVs I keep having issues where it says it’s not connected to the internet. It shows it’s connected to the network but no internet. I’ve had them wired and wireless when I’ve seen that. Usually rebooting the router fixes it. I don’t know why the Apple TVs are the one things having issues connecting to the internet when everything else works fine.

Haven't "sold" an AppleTV in years, but obviously still hook them up often. Most of my systems use Control4 as the UI, so I do a lot of Roku and mini drivers. Never sold anything but the Ultra, and I very rarely get any issues that aren't solved by a simple reboot, and those only once in a very rare time. I don't have any sites I know of where the Roku device requires troubleshooting consistently.

Have you been putting the Apple TVs on static IPs? If not, try that and see if it fixes the problem.

They're both the 3920- my older ones couldn't be updated and they were becoming intolerably flaky. I have one Stick and that didn't work well. The Premieres are good.

On 2 jobs they were just using the xfinity router. On another one he had a nighthawk router getting internet from his dsl modem. And 1 had a araknis router getting internet from a xfinity router in bridge mode.
