If 720p looks better... why are you asking? Most likely the set has a native 720 resolution... if 720p looks better than 1080i it's probably because the set doors a poor job at interpolating the signal and expanding to the 1080i. Use 720p and don't worry about the shoddy software struggling to get a decent picture at 1080i.

Is there a technical answer to the question? Im not asking for an opinion of what "you think looks the best".

The technical answer is... the set has a native 720 resolution. The way the set displays a 1080i image is by using software algorithims to fill in the blanks and diplay an image greater than the native resolution. Some sets will do this better than others, it is a software, algorithim, processing function. Runco does this extremely well. I am not familiar with your set. If it looks poor in 1080i, then your set does a poor job doing it, and it's best to leave the set in 720p (requiring no black magic to make things appear 1080i).

Brijaws , your not going to get a clear cut straight answer on this . Theres no set standard for HD programming , every tv upconverts differently and all sources are different . Use the resolution that looks best for your specific application and be done with it .
Sometimes you just gotta do a ball check and get errr done !!
