I agree, just meant that I think the guys here
are smart enough to understand that.

Honestly a public system is a lot like a private
one with insurance. The insurance payment you
are paying today will be used for someone that
needs treatment now, when you get sick you don't
pay and your premium and that of others will be
used to pay for you. The big differences
1) everyone is paying to their capacity (i.e.
taxes) and is covered equally depending on their
needs

This sounds pretty close to a quote from a certain book by a certain German philosopher.

2) government and medical institutions not trying
to make a profit

You'll have a hard time convincing me profits are bad.

3) even though doctors are well paid they are
still public servants and so cost can be controlled.

I have a client that's a highly paid heart specialist that moved to the states so he could make what he was worth. Taking the profit motive out of medicine could lead to less that the best care.

anyways, I guess we should let them get back to
their original topic, my original post was meant
a bit in jest and did not mean to derail the thread

Anthony, I would hate if this thread turned into a debate over the merits of socialism. Let's agree that you can be happy with your system and we can be happy with ours.

who is making a profit? medical institutions or the government in a public health system

the point is in a public system the government pays it with our taxes some go into health others into military and into every other program that the government runs. Unlike an insurance company they don't try to increase their profit to raise shareholder value. The next part is that hospitals and clinics are public as well, so they to don't try to make a profit. And that is where the savings come into play

I know enough doctors in Canada to know they have a decent pay. On the other hand greed is not a measure of quality :-)

Anthony, I would hate if this thread turned into a debate over the merits of socialism

the point is not that socialism is good, but many think that at least when it comes to health that everyone should be on a levelled playing field. The rich as well as the poor feel sorrow when their friends feel pain, suffering. And in that at least it should be equal

Let's agree that you can be happy with your system and we can be happy with ours.

don't have a problem with that. If you look at my original post it was mentioned as a joke (as can be seen by the smiley)

Oh man, that's a scary read.

You are right that pain is pain. But you are close to advocating taxing the rich to pay for the poors health insurance. Is it not enough that the top 25% wage earners already pay 83% of all taxes? Dont those tax dollars already go to state and county medical infrastructure?

Any person can walk into an ER and see a doctor today.

A lot of old-timers in this original thread!

I hope they are all alive and not needing their health insurance on a regular basis!
There is no truth anymore. Only assertions. The internet world has no interest in truth, only vindication for preconceived assumptions.
