Daniel,
With more and more devices supporting RS-232, is it possible to get a file section for sharing RS-232 codes? It could be like the discrete codes section with the baud rate info etc, then the actual codes. I know I would like it if I could get the codes for a device before I arrive on site to install it. I also have a few I can share.

Haven't had a request for that before. Anyone else interested in sharing codes for this?

I would like to have such a section to share codesets as well. It could eliminate much of the trial and error of using RS 232. Haing an actual command list with the appropriate strings would be a whole lot easier than trying to decipher some of the protocols out there

I think it would be great to have a file section for this but wouldnt it be easier to just post up the .doc, .xls or .pdf files instead of making a file with the list commands?
Also, I have run into several manufacturers that had me sign a statement, of sorts, stating that I would not re-distribute the protocol documents and that the documents were for dealers only. I still managed to get a copy of the protocol from the tech support guys even though I was not a dealer for the product line. I guess I am wondering if there are any legal issues Daniel would have to deal with concerning the posting of the types of documents?

I think posting official or user created documents WOULD be a lot easier then me creating a whole section for codes to be inputted bit-by-bit. Especially since I'm not yet sure how much content there would actually be.

Some of the documents themselves are quite verbose with very little useful information. (JVC anyone?) Others are short, sweet, and to the point.

That was my point. I have a file from Epson for instance that is four pages, but only one is really needed. I can cut/paste the text from .doc/.xls/.pdf into a single page of text, then submit it and the codes that I have personally used as one e-mail. All Daniel would have to do is copy/paste the text.

I think this would be a great idea. We haven't done much with 232 control as of yet but there are several projects coming up where we will be. This could make my life easier and I'll also post what little I have code wise.
thanks

I would suggest only uploading .zip documents. Protocols can be lengthy and storage space will become dear at some point. An old protocol can be just as necessary as a new one if you need the codes for an older unit as I have recently, protocols for older Sony and Pioneer plasmas.

I think this is a great idea as well.... a Archive of RS-232 documents has been tried before with little success... I think RC here would be a great place to give it another go....
Maybe a "Home Automation" forum to go along with it?

with over 75% of my time spent trying to interface crestron to every damn thing that people decide to put a dsub9 on, i pray DAILY for such a data base...
also, what/who do we custom installers need to ask/bitch at to get a STANDARDIZED rs-232 format (hahahaha... i know)...
im tired of different baud rates, paritys, handshaking or not, checksums....
im going to talk to a few people at CEDIA EXPO this year... stir the pot a bit.

We need to lean on our product reps and tech support people. The manf. should be falling all over each other to get codes posted to a site like this.

I would love to see some expansion here at RC. Not only RS-232 files, but if people are willing to share AMX, Crestron, Elan, etc. files that would be great too! I think that with the installer base that has been established here at RC, there is a huge opportunity to create a community willing to share more than remote control programs. Maybe it can even be a members only thing that would include a fee or a CEDIA membership - that would keep the DIYers at a distance.
