I have this room that has been gutted for about 2yrs due to water damage from leaky toilet in bathroom above. We never fully utilized this room
And had become an office/catchall. So, thinking maybe I turn it into a small movie room. Not the most ideal room. 12’1” x 19’ with 7.5’ ceiling. You walk in on one end of the 12’1” width dimention. Doorway all the way to side. (I’d try to post some pics if I knew how since photobucket option is out). Opposite side has large picture window. 19’3” wall on side where you walk in is the garage wall. Opposite side has 6’ slider to backyard.

Haven’t decided TV or screen/projector. If I went the projector route, I “could” put a screen right over the picture window on the far wall (12’1”) If I did a TV, that wouldn’t work and would have to put that on the opposite short 9’ remaining wall, where you walk in the room.

Then of course there is the speakers. 3 walls are outside walls. (Backyard, driveway and garage).

Like I said not the most ideal room. So looking for some suggestions.

Go atmos.

I have a basement room almost identical to yours except I have 8ft ceilings and a wall of windows/door.

I would kill for a projector but it’s a no go. I’m going with a 75” TV whenever I do it. Wife just told me this morning that if I want to watch my shows I better build a man cave. SOA spinoff comes out in October. That’s my goal :D

Brendon,

When I thought about turing this room into a theater I searched for your Atmos thread cause I remember you posted a discussion.

We toyed with basement too but that has drop ceiling and is under 6’6”. Plus a dropped beam and Mally comums which cut the room.

Another drawback of the room I am planning on using is it’s directly below our bedroom. I have to see if I can Budget for projector and screen for upstairs room. Thought about 75” or 85” Sony XBR but then the existing window is an issue. It will remain regardless for outside ashtetics and not screwing with the hardie siding and stone on the exterior. If I flip and put tV on other side, The doorway puts the TV is off center and then can’t push furniture over due to that side due to the sliding glass doors.

Anyone know how to put pics in a thread cause those would help since I would like opinion so onto best layout.

I’m assuming then for Atmos I should be thinking of in ceiling for the height channels? Don’t think there is room for floor standing anything.

You can use Dropbox for linked images.

Create a folder named 'never move' or something, and the images will be linked forever - at least until DB folds.

Disclaimer -this has worked for me in the past, but haven't tried it in a couple years.

If someone watches mostly broadcast TV and streams some Roku, is Atmos still worth the trouble?

Is the best effect with encoded discs, not so much with other sources?
There is no truth anymore. Only assertions. The internet world has no interest in truth, only vindication for preconceived assumptions.

Get a domain and cheap hosting and use ftp or WordPress to host your images....downloads...etc. I use ftp all the time. Couldn't survive without it.

Heck yes... we are still in the realitive early stages of object based audio.... the immersive effects are very real.... other than cheep budget 5.1 we will not do anything else at this point.... Integra is updating the AVR line for the near entry piece to have 9 channels of amplification out of the box.
Jack Rainey - Full disclosure...reformed integrator, now mid-Atlantic manufacturers rep for: Integra, Paradigm, Anthem, Parasound, Atlona, LG TV's and Metra Home Theater...among others

Well here are links to some pics I put in google drive.  Hope this works to get an idea of room somewhat.    Suggestions of speaker placement etc appreciated.

Thinking 2 town of seating.  If facing the window wall for screen. I can build a riser in back for a couch around back wall.  Then do maybe lounger seating at the front row. Good seats.

id prefer my room to be more wide than long... i'd do a giant ass 2.35:1 on the long wall, get rid of the patio doors or move them to window wall ...

the biggest screen you can do on the window wall if its 12 foot is about 120 inches, and that gives about 1 foot to wall on each side of screen.

i'd do atmos with in ceiling speakers... and then a 7.1 setup with those so thats 7.2.2 or 7.4.2

i have a similar problem at my current house, but the solution was easy... we dont use or need those patio doors because we have 2 other patio doors within 10 feet of those. so we have some cool bamboo patio door /window treatments and the giant couch backs up to them like its a wall with bambo on it. we will have 2 media rooms with projectors. both have to be compromised because of house layout. problems will be solved when we build the new house.

It would be super simple to slap drywall over that window. Paint it before you install it or put curtains in the window frame and from outside noone would know you have the window blocked.

Also, big enough screen can completely cover that window and that might solve your problem as well.

As for ATMOS, your walls are open now. Get the wire there, and if you can't afford speakers, you'll at least be ready.

Thanks all.

I know this room isn't ideal and need to make sacrifices to what would be ideal or perfect for speaker location and placement and have numerous pitfalls to overcome. So, looking for thoughts on tradeoff's.

I quickly drew a crude layout. Links to PDF or JPG.

As stated previously, I have 3 "outside" walls in this room (window, slider and other long wall, which is the garage). Ideally, I would like to keep speakers out of these walls/cavities since I would sacrifice insulation in the 2x4 construction.

If I do 2 rows of seating and put the back row back on/close to the short wall, the row in front (ideal seating) would put the backs somewhere in line within the area of the slider.

The Atmos will be going in my living room. Unfortunately due to the width and ceiling construction I don’t think I can do anything more then 5.1.2. I may not even do atmos downstairs since it will be upstairs in the living room. Since it’s a place to watch and play video games (rare) I think I’ll just plan on doing a 5.1 System.

I’m anxious to get my living room done. Of course I was dead in the beginning of the year so I had no money. Now I have money but no time! :P hell, by the time I get to it 85” TVs May be obtainable! Lol

2x4s by linear foot are cheaper than any cable you have on the truck.
Slap single bottom plate, single top plate and studs 24"O.C. and you got yourself a decoupled wall. Now you have plenty of room for wires, speakers and additional insulation.
I'd bet you your wall with lumber and drywall will be less than a nice dinner out with the wife.
