I know we've discussed it before, but being able to log in and solve a problem without rolling a truck is great. Today I got a text from a customer that she couldn't add a new user to a door lock. I logged in, saw the step she had missed and fixed it, tested the code, texted her it was fixed, and received a reply "you rock" all while sitting on the throne taking a crap.

I take it you FINished the paperwork, too.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

They could probably easily do so. Elan has it in their Configurator software. And I have been on with C4 tech support and they were able to see ALL devices on the network from their end.

I want to start installing a big red flip up toggle switch on the racks or nearby, that basically is a circuit breaker for the entire system. Reboot everything with one flip of a switch. Train the client to toggle that switch before they call, and you will likely get less calls. :)

Why not install an IP-based power switch? If you only need a few outlets to be power-cycled, it would prevent disabling the whole system which, when cameras are recording, is probably not great because of that Murphy bastige (not you, Rick).

I thought the part about the entire event taking place while taking a dump added a new level of humor

I've just started using Greenlight for most of our systems:

http://www.greenlightcontrol.com

I always setup network monitoring for most of the gear we install, but this gives that extra level of detail into the control system and has already saved me 4 truck rolls. They have support for most major control systems (RTI, C4, Crestron, AMX...) and I'm really loving it so far. If you are interested in remote access and monitoring, you should definitely check it out.

IP controllable is the best but for budget systems these are great for under $80 retail. You get a button for each outlet.

These cost even less but only have a single switch.

I have two of these in my rack at home.

They mainly get used to reboot the sat receivers.

Everything is behind two Tripp Lite UPS as well.

Mac, I used to get those from MC Electronics and I wanna say they were about 20 bucks, now they're more.

You can get the same Pyle for about $30.
