We have a customer that has a Panasonic 50" plasma. He wants to use a DVD, VCR, HD cable box, and a TIVO with it. Someone mentioned to him that he should get a scaler so that all devices would appear closer in quality. Would any of you use a scaler for this application and if so which one? It would have to be sub $1500. I was talking to him about the centerstage cs-hd, but after reading a review that stated how you have to select the output resolution each time you switch devices I have my doubts. Has anyone heard of the zinwell brightview for $700. Any comments?

I'm always right. The only time I was wrong was the time that I thought, that I was wrong.

Look at a DEnon receiver. Any of the new denon receivers will upconvert s-video, composite to component video as well as displaying 480i,480p 720, and 1080i. Just run a component video cable to the plasma and then select whatever you want to watch without having to change inputs on the TV. We do this a lot on Samsung DLP's and the SDTV pictur is phenominal. If you are still looking to do a scaler (Because you customer has a PRE/PRO and doesn't want a DENON) look at the DVDO.

Upconversion and Scaling are 2 different things. The new 5805 may have scaling in it.. Cant remeber for sure, I was so busy laughing at the sheer size of the unit I forgot to ask any serious questions at CEDIA........

The Yamaha RX-Z9 has a DCDI Scaling chip in it....... I cant think of any other current receievrs that do.......

Stay away from the lower end DVDO Products... The Iscan and Ican ultra are a wast of time as they only output 480p and the set still nees to rescale the image...

Make sure you choose a Scalare that has your Plasmas Native resolition as an output option... 720p usually works on a 50, but 1366x768 is better as the set doesn't have to do anything to the signal.

Look at the AVToolbox AVT-3800 for a Cheap solution.... Under $500 and does a pretty good 720p. THe Crustal Image VS2.0 is pretty awesome for the dough as well. I've used those for a couple years now and cant complaign for the price.

I know that upconversion and scaling are two different things. What i was trying to say is that depending on the equipment it might not be worth the scaler. For ease of opertaion, the denon is a great solution.
