That doesn't make them the best. It just makes them the first at certain things. Between their business practices, there efforts to not warranty items, and several other issues, I don't see how they could be ranked as the best.

Compared to? I'm not trying to start a debate but rather hoping you could fill in the blank. If Lutron has never been the best at any lighting control then who is/was?

Not to be a pedant but if Lutron has been the first at certain things it is logically impossible for them to have never been the best at them[things].

Are you suggesting that patent litigation is a measure of how great a company is? Because that is what I felt the first line of your post implied.

No.

I love the product but as a company, they are arrogant and prickish and having heard some horror stories from others, I would never tell Lutron one bit of information about my client! Ever..................

They have a history of questionable business practices in who they want as dealers.
Bill's Electric & Home Theater & Plumbing & Automation & Small Engine Repair, and Animal Removal Services......did I mention we do remotes also?

I recently was on a renovation project that required the existing Lutron system to be expanded. Because we were handling the audio and integration, I had a lot of interaction with the Lutron dealer and programmer. The lighting system was just under 10 years old. But the only thing compatible in the old system with new parts were the dimming modules. Absolutely everything else had to be replaced with new parts.

I also don't like the way the modules mount in the panels. Vantage kicks their ass on the panel design.

I think he talks about Lutron stealing jobs from some dealers and giving them to others.

Has anyone used their new Caseta Dimmers? I've done a few on installs and they work great with the Pro Control IP driver. It's perfect for those small to medium jobs as long as no low volt lighting is required. Can't beat the price either. Although not much margin but you can still make it up on labor & cost savings to budget customers that can't afford to shell out $100/dimmer.
Knowing that Gold went up a few K makes me think "well now I have to do a better job on selling more equipment".

Crestron or Lutron.

PERSONALLY- I dislike Lutron's tech support, corporate culture, programming software, and other things they do with their SKUs.

However! Lutron stuff DOES work.

Since nearly any job we do with lighting ALSO has some other control I prefer to use Crestron for lighting as I find it easier to integrate.

One other plus for Crestron is their new Pyng system. It uses all standard Crestron dimmers and you can add on full Crestron if the client wants it.

Lutron's new Caseta system requires you to rip out the whole system if the client wants to do more (this is what I mean by Lutron and SKUs)

Lutron is a solid product. They have great wired and wireless products. Shades are great.

IMO the only reason to switch teams is if you are a Crestron dealer and want to do business with 1 company for lights/shades & control.

There really isn't any other reason IMO to learn a new product.

You really are comparing UPB to a centralized lighting system? Or are you just yanking chains?

When paired with a central processor (for me, Elan G); UPB can easily be compared to Lutron, with custom keypads options being the only glaring missing option.

Without a central processor, which UPB does not natively possess, no it can't be compared.

I would much rather use 4 (or 6) UPB dimmers for a single room Home Theater control than a GrafikEye.

Lutron can bite me

+1...I had a conversation with a customer about this yesterday. Their shading and AV will be Crestron and adding a 3rd party lighting system just creates one more point of potential failure. She agreed

And adding a 3rd party lighting system adds one more potential safety net that may keep lights working when the Crestron system takes a lightning hit.

It can be argued either way.
