I understand they both are software based numbers. I just think they are gimicky. Truthfully, I almost always shut off the clearmotion/motionflow because I can't stand them. I personally think the video processing in the Sony's are nicer than Samsungs and the Gorilla Glass is really cool. I do however like the ultra thin bezel of Samsungs. I prefer Sony's overall.

the number isn't based on software, but rather magicware. the panel refreshes at 240Hz, and doesn't generate any more frames. next, the marketing team pretends that the backlight and the coating on the glass somehow combine their wonder twin powers to boost the motion 'flow' to 960 'somethings'.
meanwhile, plasma displays all refresh at 600Hz.
ultimately i agree with you (and probably the vast majority of nerds): the best refresh rates are 24, 60, or 72Hz.

The worst part about Sony is the only true 240 panels they offer are the HX and XBR line. Why put the Gorilla glass on the NX series and not make it 240 is beyond belief. And the HX series does not have the Gorilla glass, go figure.
