hi ive only seen two products in the UK with HDMI all Pioneer. now ive read quite a lot about the picture/sound (coming soon) but the official documents also say it can do a lot of other features if enabled for eg
Features CEC provides a number of recommended features designed to enhance the functionality and interoperability of devices within an HDMI system.
A device may implement a sub-set of these features based on its device type and the level of functionality offered. The following list describes the set of features offered: • One Touch Play A device may be played and become the active source with a single button press. • System Standby Enables all devices to be switched to standby with a single button press. • Preset Transfer A devices presets can be auto configured to match those of the TV. • One Touch Record A recording can be made with a single button press (e.g. via TV). • Timer Programming Any device can program a timer recording on a recording device. • System Information A device can auto-configure its language and country settings. • Deck Control A device can control (e.g. play, fast forward etc.) and interrogate a playback device (a deck). • Tuner Control Allows a device to manipulate the tuner of another device. • Vendor Specific Commands Allows vendor-defined commands to be used. • OSD Display A device can use the on-screen display of the TV to display text strings. • Device Menu Control Enables a device to control the menu of another device. • Routing Control Allows the control of CEC Switches for streaming of a new source device. • Remote Control Pass Through RC commands may be passed through to other devices within the system. • Device OSD Name Transfer Devices may request the preferred OSD name of other devices within the system. Protocol Extensions In order to allow for extensions to the protocol in future releases of the specification, the current opcodes and parameters can be extended by adding further parameters onto them. For entirely new commands, new opcodes can be allocated. For entirely new device types, new logical addresses can be allocated.
Now I would love to know as you guys in the U.S.A get the stuff way before us in blighty . Have seen any of the above functions with a HDMI device.
I have never read about anyone mentioning these added features

Well i've found out no one knows yet and its just future products may have these features. i'm suprised no one has mentioned the Remote Control Pass Through – RC commands may be passed through to other devices within the system.
so Xantech etc may have a box in the future with a HDMI socket to ir transmiters for non HDMI equipment
from the spec HDMI maybe not only the new video and audio connector but the new RS232

Not sure if you are a member but I would spemd some time doing searches at AVS forum on this subject. There is a hell of a lot of info on it there. You might also search on HDCP.
You could also do a search on the line HDMI and the member name "Amillians". He had written many knowledgeable posts on the subject.

I don't think the CEC part of HDMI is going to be the earth shaking feature you might seem to think. It sound to me on par with Mits Netcommand, Sony Slink, etc. But to answer your question, I have not heard of anyhting that supports it yet.

It doesn't seem to be on par with slink ect... if I understand it right. It seems more on par with IEEE1394. I just installed a Sony 61" XBR plasma and for shits and giggles put in an old mitsu DVHS deck and hooked it up firewire. Not only does the audio and video come through this line, but I can use the sony remote to controll the deck with the commands being sent back down the same wire. On top of this, as soon as I plugged the deck in the plasma recognized the piece by name right away. This kind of non-proprietary communication is what HDMI sounds like to me.

Nope, it's not what you are dreaming of. First off it's optional, which typically means that very few devices are going to impliment it. Second, it's only for a few basic commands. Here is a excerpt form the spec: "CEC provides a number of recommended features designed to enhance the functionality and interoperability of devices within an HDMI system. A device may implement a sub-set of these features based on its device type and the level of functionality offered. The following list describes the set of features offered: "
Read the top post for the features. That's all there is, no video or audio, nothing.

BOSE won't use it cause THEY didn't design it, couldn't design it (limited engineering capabilities...OBVIOUSLY) and can't make money by offering it....they still offer only FAKE versions of DD, and NO DTS...
back on thread though, I think it's going to be a long time before any MAJOR amounts of product are developed with HDMI technology...although decent in theory, ther are hundreds of other ways/methods/products currently in use that integrators are already used to, that can accomplish the same thing, at higher margins.
ILOVEBOSE...you may quite possibly be one of the most WORTHLESS, POS, POSTER'S to EVER present yourself on this website. This FORUM is for professional's, who are often needing help, info, tech updates etc....and you have NEVER, in ANY of your posts, EVER....OFFERED these things...
Although I COMPLETELY DISAGREE, and can SCIENTIFICALLY PROVE, your claims that BOSE is the four letter word for GOD, I WILL AGREE that many of RC's NORMAL pro posters are capable of making valuable arguments, and HAVE about bose, but yours are NOT among them...
so as wolf said...without the asteriks
PISS OFF

Well Avdude,
I guess the comment I made long ago about ILOVEBOSE being your alter ego is definitely not true as you wouldn't tell yourself to piss off. I still think he is one of us incognito having a good old time riling us up with his crapola. No big type here as I have nothing good to add to this thread other than I got a good chuckle.
I'm surprised that you didn't call or e-mail me today re the little joke (for those of you wondering... I shipped Avdude smething wrapped in a Bose amp box... he probably threw it away!)

I have been accused alot of times of having multiple personalites, but ILOVEBOSE would be the FIRST MEMBER OF RC I would.....ohhh never mind....too much respect for most of the members here, and for my freedom...to expound!
and you accused me of being "engineer friend" who I ALSO am not!
