Is it true that plasma tv's dont function properly at high elevations? I have a customer that wants to install a 42" in his cabin which is at 6200 ft. elevation. I've heard that the Pioneer Elite will work. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks, Scott

Scott,
They function fine, although there is MUCH debate as to their longevity at this altitude.
THEY ARE NOISY!!! Because of the increased pressure at altitude, plasmas buzz. I ask you to equste them to a neon sign. Have you ever been to Aspen, Vail, Telluride, Taos, Tahoe, etc...? If so, have you ever listened to a neon sign buzzing?
Take that same neon sign to sea level, it won't buzz as much...
Zenith, and VERY SELECT NEC's are produced in a high altitude model as special order.
The pioneers look OK, the are noisy
The Hitachis and Fujitsu's look stellar, but they are very noisy (the hitachi more than the fujitsu)
At the altitude you speak of, I have had the best luck with NEC and their Marantz derivitive...they still make some noise, but they are the least offensive of the lot.
At 9500 feet, the few Pioneers I have installed sound like an electric razor...would NOT recommend the Pioneer for higher altitude IF noise is an issue...
I have LOTS of plasmas in the field at 5280 to 10,200 feet...
please e-mail me if I can help further!

definately inquire about an NEC before you install it, as some are the noisiest at high altitudes... The people who told me that said they shipped a pair of 50" plasmas via air freight once... both screens shatttered at 30,000 feet... haha

ALL PLASMAS will shatter at 30 thousand feet if not in a pressurized cargo hold!
Much like a human who recently shipped himself via commercial carrier would have died if not pressurized...for different reasons though!
I would venture that TWO broken plasmas, shipped via air freight, were broken because of mis-handling and NOT altitude!
I recently returned from Santa Barbara, CA, where I did a job for a friend...when I got out of the Canadair Regional Jet (this is important because they unload the luggage straight onto the tarmac at DIA) I saw my tool box, including screwdrivers, drill, razor blades, etc....busted open on the ground....
AHL...like I said...have INSTALLED these at altitude...ALOT
If your are expericencing buzzing in Houston, then something else is wrong.
If your are hearing they are the noisiest at altitude, then you are getting mis-information.
I have over 50 in the field, most at 7000 feet plus.
They are NOT quiet as I stated, but they are the QUIETEST of anything except the new zeniths...
Denver is at 5280 (Mile High City)...we go up from there!
What IS the altitude in Houston, BTW?

altitude here is 75 feet... the one that's buzzing is in Santa Fe, NM, at 7300 feet...
it buzzed here a little, too, before I took it to SF... it was on the 20th floor, at about 350 feet altitude

ahl..
have 2 installs (for friends) in Santa Fe. and one ongoing in Taos...I know what you're talking about...
If it buzzed at 350, it's broken! No doubt!
I have NEC's at 5-6K that are near silent, so something else is wrong

Is there any limitations with LCD?
In my opinion the SHARP AQUOS 40"ers that I saw at CES - BLEW AWAY ALL NEW PLASMAS!!!!!
In fact I just got back from Bad Guys because out of curiosity I wanted to see what the Sony Plasmas look like...not bad but right next to it was a Sharp and even though I already knew I liked this new generation of LCD better than Plasma I was again blown away by how much better LCD looks with High Def material. Now...standard def is another topic...I'm not so convinced that the LCD is worth a &*$%% with regular broadcasts. Thoughts?
