Hey folks,

I have been interested in home theater for a while and I am curious about getting into the business. I don't really want to start my own business at this time...I just want to work for someone doing installations and theater setups. However, besides setting up my own equipment...I have never done this professionally.

My question is...can I get trained somewhere. Will employers train people looking to get into the business?

Also, is there a distinct difference between companies that design theaters and installers? Do many companies do it all?

Any info, opinions or advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Mike

Well, Mike....if you're willing to come to San Marcos, I could use some help from time to time.

OK really....check with businesses in Houston, and go straight to a manager, and tell them exactly what you posted here. There are enough in Houston that someone is probalby hiring. Just don't expect much pay while getting your feet wet. CEDIA is a GREAT source for training, but you either need to be a member, or work for a member. If you do go to work in this field, get as much training as you can. It will make you a better and more confident installer, and increase your pay as well. The next CEDIA training in Dallas is mid-May.

Good luck!!!

a quick word of advice... there are very good instllation companies in Houston, and there are very BAD installation comapines in Houston...

a good one is Media Design if you're into the large company thing...

a very BAD one is Texas Sound and Light

(taking a risk naming names? Nah.. what's that little bastard gonna do.. sue me? Bring it on!)

We can do it my way, or we can do it my way while I yell. The choice is yours.

Mike,
The number one rule in business ethics is DO NOT make disparaging statements about you competition. I don't know if Ahl in this business, but if he (she)is, I would steer clear of someone who makes those kind of statements, even if another business may deserve it. Why stoop to that level and make yourseld look just as bad?

Mike,

Thanks again for the advice.

I would almost rather go to work for a smaller company first...then move to a larger firm.

I looked at Media Design's website...they look pretty good.
