Hi -

I'm having a helluva time getting the Zone 2 on the Denon AVR-3803 to work properly. I just installed a new system, and planned on using the Surround Back amps in Zone 2 mode for outdoor speakers.

Receiver works fine in all modes except Zone 2. I've done the redundant audio connection for Zone 2 from the DVD player, so that's not the problem.

What happens is that I lose the "Variable" volume option in the receiver setup every time I assign the amp to Zone 2. The variable option is there if I assign the amp to Back surround. I need variable for zone 2!!!

The only volume I get from Zone 2 is a fixed volume - whatever the receiver was set at.

What am I doing wrong? It's a good thing it's winter and my clients aren't outside, 'cause they're getting a little annoyed with me, and I'm pretty frustrated.

By the way, I just want to say that this forum has helped me a lot - I've been in the biz for about 18 months now, and I learn a lot from reading the posts, and the Home Theater Master files rock.

Thanks in advance.

WHen the amp is set for "Zone 2" there are no options. It IS variable. Period. When your using the Line outputs, there is a Zone 2 Volume option... Variable OR Fixed.... ANd you can fix it ant any level.

Any time you set the amps to be for zone 2 they become a variable output. You no longer have a choice, plus it would be a bad idea to have these amps cranked to feed a volume control because when the whole system blows up your clinet will be out of outdoor and theater sound (much less retraining them on how to use the system without the rcvr) That all being siad I think all you are doing wrong is not setting the remote to zone 2 control and then using the volume control buttons on the remote.

If you are exiting the system setup, then setting the remote to zone 2 (by pressing amp until zone 2 appears in the LCD box) and the volume control is still not working there is one glitch I have seen on 3803's that I received before June 03 or so. Press the rec. out/ zone 2 hard button on the front panel of the rcvr a couple of times, then set it to zone 2 (it is one of the 4 buttons below the nput knob).

Try those and let us know how it goes.

I'm not sure this is even a glitch, just it is the way that it works. If those outputs are set as tape out, then volume will be full.

It is pretty dumb, though, that Denon would let you set the amps to Zone 2 without automatically doing this, but I think the above is your answer.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

check remote control for volume of zone-2
they usually put the volume control of zone-2 in the remote control.

Good Luck.

most Bose lifestyle systems can be at least two zone systems with the excellent lifestyle 50 having a total of four zones.
These features are not just an after thought but part of the quality Bose design

ILOVEBOSE,
the price of admission here for posting messages that have absolutely no freakin relationship to the theme at hand

is that you have to look up every post ever made by user "G50AE" and read them ALL along with the sarcastic, vituperative, not to say occasionally vitriolic, responses that have mostly shamed him into either actually addressing the issue at hand or keeping to his normal one-handed keyboard mode.

Or, to the point myself, nobody asked about Bose.

The good news Mark is that while it is a bit goofy, and its NOT at all intuitive as it's supposed to be...It will work, and work GREAT! I Have done great things with the Denon Zone 2 on the 3803 and the TSU6000 etc. If you have any more issues, just let me know.
