If your really picky about labels peeling off (like me), try using a small piece of clear heat shrink over top. I always get good customer feedback when I do that.

The comment was made that nobody tallies up the cost of labels. Adding the clear heat shrink -- the time to cut, install and shrink -- has got to be tallied, because it can add hours to a job.

I once came back to expand a hifi store sound room that I had built. I had used multi-pair cables to run audio under a floor from the AMCO switcher to the amps. The cables broke out into pairs to go into some twenty different receivers. I had typed up the color code of the multipair wire and stapled that sheet to the wall in three places. I literally saved hours because I just had to read the information off of the sheet.

Label the wires!
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

All time and materials get billed for unless it's a quote. Heat shrinking is simple and fast (unless you use a lighter to shrink). It's makes your work look a lot better then most others out there.

This may be a dumb question, but does someone make 'split' heatshrink, or is it OK to slice a piece so you can wrap it around an already terminated (think punched-down) wire?

Heat shrink wont work that way. Its not sticky, its held in place because heat makes the material shrink until its tight around the cable.

That's what I thought.
