I have read and followed the directions in the FAQ section and I'm still receiving a "COM 1: Opened but no response from RC device." I have checked that the port is functional using another remote program for Elan Via. It checks out OK. The problem still remains that the Pronto will not respond. Has anyone had this problem? I am using an HP laptop Model ze1110 with a Belkin F5U409 USB to Serial adapter as the COM1 port. I really appreciate any info you can give. Thanks for your help and time.

Will,

Try waking the Pronto up before beginning download by tapping on the screen.

Try Tonto.

Will,
First, thank you for reading the FAQ. It may be a bad Pronto download cable if raiders_fan94's suggestions don't work. Please post your results so we know the outcome.

Thanks for the thought but no dice. It was one of the first things I thought of. This thing is making me crazy.

I haven't tried a different cable but I doubt that is the problem as I have used this cable a quite a few times before. The only variable I see is the use of the USB interface. Stupid computers, Doh!

Will,

Try downloading Tonto, it has a better Pronto to PC interface.

If you have virus detection software running,SHUT IT DOWN.I am fairly confident this will solve your Issues.
We had six seperate computers in our office that wouldn't allow us to up/download.... We finally discovered that the only computer that worked was one we had accidently allowed our subscription to lapse.
When we shut it down on the rest, They all worked.
We still have a glitch now and again and have found that removing a battery and replacing it will snap it back to communication mode.
Let me know if it works...

I had a similar problem, I don't know if this will help you, but I have Palm Desktop installed on my computer, and at installation it asks what COM port you want to use, I had set that to COM 1, the same port that Pronto remotes use, and received the same error you have. Perhaps you should take a look at that other remote program you mentioned and check the settings.

Just a suggestion. :)

Raiders_fan94,
Where can I get a copy of Tonto and what makes it better than ProntoEdit?

Thanks for the info,
Will

There is a Tonto thread in the Pronto Forum...It has a link to a free download.

As for what makes it better, I think that it doesn't wait for a reset on the Pronto before it establishes communication. There are also other goodies that are too numerous to mention...Light years ahead of PE. Nice program.

Also, what John Galt said is also true...I've been a victim of this problem.

I am haveing the exact same problem. I have a dell laptop but everything else that you stated is happening to me. I called belkin tech support and they told me that the F5U409 is made primarily for PDA devices but will work with some serial devices. That is why it worked for our Elan VIA's, they must be one of the serial products that do work. He told me that the belkin F5U103 is made for usb to serial devices. I just ordered one from CompUSA and I will let you know if it works when it gets here.

TRUST ME, take the Belkin cable back to the store if you can. Tried everything and could not get it to work on my new viao with ProntoPro. Went to Radio Shack and tried theeir cable, was up and running in minutes.
