when/if i convert to Harmony RF using the 1000s - will i get enough range for the distance back to the rack i am wondering? this house is quite large and has limestone walls up to 18 inches thick in some place.
in the worst place the signal will have to travel approx 40m and through about 5 walls on it's way back to the rack... [Link: remotecentral.com]I think you're out of luck on that one. I'd be prepared to use mulitple RF extenders, and if possible utilize your existing IR receiver wiring to route the extenders output back to your matrix switch. At least with the locations furthest away from your rack. I have no idea what limestone will do to RF. Good luck man

So, would i be right in saying this is the correct RTI equipment that i would need? 8 x T1 Universal Remote Controls [Link: rticorp.com]1 x RT6 Remote Control Processor [Link: rticorp.com]1 x RM-433 RF Receiver [Link: rticorp.com]but i can't seem to find any info on signal repeaters - which may or may not be needed... thanks trev

Trev,
I understand that you are trying to utilise the harmony remotes as you believe it will save you money by not having to swap them out, but this may be false economy. If you add up the cost of the engineering hours you have already put in, and will need to add to, trying to get these to work, you will probably find that it would be wiser to swap them a out and KNOW that it will solve the problem.
You will find that in this industry there is education that is free (e.g. manufacturer training) and education that costs. In-field on-site education COSTS, its a fact of life, but the experience will add to your knowledge base and should stop you making the same mistakes on the next job, although this doesn't ease the pain at the time. Believe me when I say that all others here will have been through this in one form or another, and this is why their advice is worth taking note of.
Minimise your pain. Get over the fact that you have unwittingly screwed up, and move on. Adapt, improvise, overcome...take on-board the advice, implement it, get paid, focus on the next job. Whilst you may gain a bit of personal satisfaction if you eventually make the Harmony solution work, you will undoubtedly loose money.
By the time you get it to work (if at all) you will probably have also lost the customers confidence.
With regards to the manufacturers accepting responsibility, its not going to happen. They don't even do that when it IS their screw-up. In this case they cannot be responsible for the combination of remotes and screens you have chosen, and will probably just tell you that it works fine everywhere else....
FWIW we use RTI and so far it is bullet proof in operation.
I am not trying to flame you or be offensive. I have also been where you are on more than one occasion. Accept that the original spec is going to be too labour intensive to troubleshoot, buy the correct kit for the required solution and suck up the loss in profit. Accept that this job is not going to be the earner you expected it to be. Your only achievable goal here now is customer satisfaction and possible future recommendation. Concentrate on this, and amend your designs procedures for the next job to maximise the profit on that, from the experience gained on this one.

What do you mean you wanted it on the other wall - couldn't you have mentioned this when we prewired? |

Just a quick update....
As I mentioned earlier in this thread I have been waiting for Smart-e to adapt an Abitana IR eye to work with their panel...
It arrived this morning on a pre 10am courier and i've rushed straight to site to install and test it....
Guess What??? - It seems to bloody work!!!!!!
When i look at the video matrix the IR light is completely off meaning none of the "noise" that was going down the wire is getting there any more!!! Previously the light was on full almost all the time.
The range of the RC has extended from about 15ft to about 35ft. (further than my eyes work)
The IR keyboard moves the mouse as smooth as if it was a wired mouse. I can type the complete alphabet into notepad.exe without missing a character. Something that was never possible before.
I can scroll up and down through the Sky menu as smooth as velvet. no more coughing and jerking...
im a little dizzy.

Like Smokinghot said, get f-in paid and go home with the knowledge that you almost lost your a** on this project. Remember to propose a real solution for the next job.
Good luck.
