The friend I mentioned in Post 7 is going with fluorescent paint stars on a blacklit ceiling. The ceiling is flat in the center and radiused down toward the perimeter, built with no plan for 2x4 panels and no possibility of lowering the ceiling to accommodate them.
It's an alternative if the LED stuff can't work. And he lived through the sixties and seventies, actually does remember a lot of it, so won't be weirded out by peanut butter glowing slightly green in the room.
