Started wiring this theater (with a LOT of help from GLS):

Photobucket

Photobucket

Specs include Triad InRoom Gold LCR, CinemaPlus Subs, InWall Bronze Surrounds, Integra processor and amp, acoustic design and parts from Kinetics (thanks, Greg), Epson projector, Lutron drape motor and Grafik Eye with WAC MR16 cans and GM lighting dimmable blue LED cove, CinemaTech seating.

I'll post more progress and final photos as job progresses.

I am a big Kinetics fan and have used their product in a few theaters now.

I'm nearing the end of pre-wire for two new construction jobs.  Both have insulation going in this week.  One still has wiring that needs to go out to a detached garage, but the framing isn't complete yet.

When I first walked this job six months ago, the foundation work was in place and it didn't look too bad for wiring.  Fast forward to after the sub floor is in and it's time to wire and it was much more work crawling around under there than I expected.

Here's a couple pictures of the foundation.  The round holes are filled with ductwork now so the only access between cells is thorugh the small oval holes or in some areas where there are "dugouts" under the wall (these are even harder to get through).  There are three access points and not all the cells connect, so most cable pulls required crawling in and pulling through a couple sections and then crawling back out and then back into another area to complete the run.

There'e a lot of steel on top of the foundation and also blocking between joists so even in the crawlspace everything had to be drilled between these sections.

Every now and then I'll take a photo to try and explain to my wife what I do all day... she still doesn't get it :)

This property is right on the coast and is an old Indian village.  The Indian council and archeologists were on-site the entire time they excavated for the foundation collecting and cataloging artifacts.  Apparently the area under this crane and lumber pile on the left was the cemetery.  You'll notice the green ground boxes on the left of the photo below which are for high & low voltage wiring out to the garage being framed.  I wasn't around when the conduit went in, but I guess it runs right through the middle of the cemetery... creepy!

Fast forward some and the house is now wired, partially insulated and the mahogany T&G ceiling is going up.  This is the job with all the crazy ceiling angles where the lighting cans and speakers all needed to line up and be set within 1/8" .

Here's one of the Leon speaker brackets getting lined up with the cross hairs of the laser.  The Leon brackets work great for this because the have the white triangles to help line things up.

This is a closet where they started the T&G ceiling.  You'll notice the electricians & I got the lights and speakers centered on the grooves, but the sprinkler guys missed and are off a few inches.

Basements (and even crawlspaces & attics) are unusual here.  Ran lots of empty conduit for future proofing.

Uhhhhh, The answer is Gantry Crane! Shit man i would have done the same thing if i had that availible. Half the fun is "engineering" how to do it :)

Thats your house?

Yea Brendon, that's my crib.
I build a garage I could work in on my own junk. Now the only thing I use a car lift for is to do oil change and swap brake pads :-(  No time for anything else.

Back to the stairs vs. crane. There was a tile guy at my house at the time I was playing; I mean working :-) with this and he said: "Why don't you use the stairs; it might be quicker". I gave him a devil look and told him to leave and not come back for few days.
Jeez, some people just don't get it... :-)

Mike, is this your own setup, or one for a client?

what amazes me is only 2 of the 4 HDMI input can handle 4K !

This is for a client, although I am in the process (6 months in - we're moving very slowly) of remodeling our new office/demo space.

I need to get off my ass and get moving on my own room.
Right now it might as well be an empty room with no carpet, wall treatment or even a screen. Total ghetto setup :-(

Did you say you're building on or near an Indian Burial Ground? That can't be good.

Yeah, for real Indian burial ground.  It's not that uncommon here, but really slows down the construction process when artifacts or remains are found.  The local council and archeologists get involved and can even shut down job sites to perform ritual ceremonies when remains are found.

Once this process starts, trades are required to sign in and out of the jobsite so that if any artifacts are missing or areas are disturbed they know how to talk to.

This particular job had 16" of fill dirt placed over the entire property after the excavation/archeology work was complete to protect the site.  Any time ground is disturbed below this fill dirt the Indian council and archeologist have to be notified.

I wasn't around when this stuff was going on, but the trades that were there are still talking about it.  They had to drill around 20 pilings 30+ feet deep for the foundation and the archeologists collected and sifted all the dirt from the drilling and also excavated a bunch of places during the foundation work.  They were able to map out an entire village on this property, including the cemetery which is right where we have some electrical and low volt ground boxes.

The contractor has been storing a bunch of materials in this area because no one really want's to walk around or park there :)

This is a project we started on today and hope to be done by tomorrow. The most notable thing about it is our first Stewart Filmscreen CIMA screen with the Tiburon material. It is an above-ceiling model and isn't necessarily meant to be retrofit however this particular installation is in a ceiling cavity between floors so it is a full-on retrofit. Below is the start of the rough opening and discovery in the joist bay. Thankfully there wasn't much to move but we definitely butted right against the cans on each side.

The hole was cut right against one I-joist and on the other side we firred out 8" of wood since there was nothing structural to lag into. That's what all the wood below is for. Stewart doesn't really have any provisions for this type of installation so we created holes in the enclosure for a "side-secured" installation. It is really only meant for a recessed ceiling installation from what I can tell. It is way overbuilt but appears to be quite a nice screen.

You can see the Episode in-ceiling LCRs as well. There are matching surrounds in ceiling and on-wall. The components will go in a vertical Salamander  cabinet (the Synergy Pro with rackrails) where the already-prewired head-end goes. This wasn't our prewire so there is some "interesting" stuff going on as expected. The screen was not part of the original installation so wiring is being retrofit for it. PJ is an Epson 6020 which is a fantastic unit for the price. Could not fit Episode subwoofers in the prewired locations so there are two Martin Logan Dynamo 700W on each side of the fireplace which are an impressive little sub. Will post a pic when it is all done.
The less I say, the smarter I will appear

We finished wiring and trim out for a small office. We've done many with small wall mount or caster racks, worked in and around 2 post racks or installed clients existing racks. This was a first 2-post rack install completely on our own, went very smooth.

They move in this Saturday and I'll be there to install and patch in the Data switch and run lines into cubicles. All the cables are labeled but I will put the final labels on Saturday as well.
