I have a client that is requesting to have a TV behind his mirror in his bathroom.

I was going to take a 15” LCD TV and place it in a cubby hole that we make for the TV.

Paint the wall black so that the 2 way mirror does not show the wall behind when the TV is turned on.

Have the TV video source is a DSS receiver it will be on an RF modulator so that the Lutron See Touch Switch can change channels and raise and lower the volume and turn on the tv.

I have a problem though.

I have a distributed audio system in the master bath too. There are 2 TVs this one and one for his wife mounted to a wall. I was going to use something like the Sonace AS1 (Auto Speaker Level switcher) so that when the TV turns on it will override the distributed audio system for my dual voice coil speakers over his counter and have the sound coming from the TV.

I don’t know of any 15” LCDs with Speaker outs on them.

Or any other Ideas to do this. This will be my first tv behind the mirror. The access to the tv will be to take down the mirror and get to the tv. Anyone that can lend some help would be much appericated.

Do you have any Ideas?

You could take apart the LCD and extend the speaker connections out the back of the LCD.

Can't you use the audio out of the DSS receiver to the bathroom? Should be simple enough to give it an amp channel or two, or switch the audio into the amp that supplies the bath now.

TVA-20

Stereo Amplifier with Built-In Automated Speaker-Level A-B Switcher
Sound or Video-Triggered - Replaces manually operated A-B switches

Provides HI-FI sound using the TV's line-level audio outputs

20 watts per channel

Four ohm rated amplifier

Input A is speaker-level (from other stereo system)

Input B is line-level (from TV audio output)

Output is speaker-level (to speakers)

Exclusive signal detection circuitry ensures reliable operation

Typically, the speaker-level input A is passed through to your speakers. When input B is detected, input A is disconnected. The B signal is amplified and automatically routed to the speakers

Dimensions: 8-1/2" wide x 4" high x 8-1/4" deep

Approximate shipping weight: 8 lbs.

The NILES TVA-20 works quite well. The other missing piece is a speaker level to line level adapter. We have had a hard time finding small sets with the appropriate hookups too.

If you carefully take apart the set and wire in the speaker level side to the wires going to the wimpy internal speakers, you will have a line level with RCA connectors on the other side. Of course you may void the warranty, so check out all the functions on the TV before you start and be careful. This is what custom installers are paid the 'Big Bucks' for.

We have done this many times without any problems. Be sure to take the time to adjust the TVA-20 for proper level, balance, and delay time. If you have a composite video output (probably not) use it to trigger the TVA-20 rather than the line level. It would provide a reliable trigger that will not need the level adjusted.

or,

if the television has a headphone out which is controlled by the volume control, use a stereo mini to twin rca adaptor and voila,

it works.

Do mask off the back of the set so NO light comes through behind the television. We used black construction paper.

You could use a Russound DPA 1.2 Amp. It also has automated A-B switching like the niles TVA-20. It has line level and speaker level inputs. It is also very small.

Sharp AQUOS 15" has audio outputs. You need to activate the outputs in the setup menu.

Sonance ASAP 1 does the same thing as the niles and you should be able to get one pretty easily. they work like a charm, but if you want to be more advanced then you can get their asap2 which has a card bay and 4 different switching options (including video, AC, speaker, and line level sensing) you can add cards to the card bay and use all sorts of other stuff too.
