I just want to say goodbye to my Philips Pronto 9800 as well as everyone that has helped Pronto enthusiasts on this forum over the past years.

When I started programming my first Pronto ten years ago I thought I'd be using them forever. When Philips announced they were ceasing the Pronto line, I immediately purchased several backup 9800s. Unfortunately the age of the smartphone coupled with my recent marriage has put an end to my affair with the TSU9800. Too intimidating for my wife to use comfortably, I was always left in control of the remote. If the volume was too soft or too loud, rather than adjusting it herself, she would request that I do it. Oh, my sweet wife, I'll never understand how the Volume+/Volume- button confuses you... but now you have no excuse. With Roomie now installed on our iPhones she is left with excuse and must make such adjustments herself.

My friends and family are fawning over the new Roomie setup. "No remote controls at all?!" they say, excited...

"Yes. No more remote controls at all," I say out loud.
"Except for the one which will always remain in my heart," I say only for myself to hear.

Pronto, I hope you know I truly loved thee.

I have seen more request for a remote in the last 12 months.. this is because people are over the mobile device,,, now I hear customers going , is there not a remote like we used to have, so I can just pick the thing up and turn on the Tv/system, with on button , with out having to find the phone/Tablet go to the App wait for app to start etc etc ..

My theater is still controlled by a 9800. The remote in the Master bedroom is a 9600, mainly because I can use it while not looking at it, even when it is under the covers.

I do have an iPhone that I have programmed to control all the TV's, lights, appliances, et, but I need to look at it to use it.

Just wanted to say thanks for all the support you've given us over the years, Barry. You've helped out so many people learn how to get the most out of their Pronto Pros. I just sold my last 9800 + RFX9400 on eBay. It was sad to see them go.

Having to look down at the device for a simple procedure like adjusting the volume is a tad annoying... but not nearly as annoying as when my wife would complain the sound was too loud or too soft and that the remote was closer to me so I should get up and change it. Now with the app on both of our phones, she no longer has that excuse. Lucky me.

My TSU-9400 is on its last legs. A few too many drops have cracked the lcd on it. Since I can't seem to find a replacement, what do you folks recommend? I've been away from the remote community for quite a while, and I'm not sure what's out there that would be comparable.

Thanks!

IMHO there is nothing out there quite like the ProntoPro. I still use the Pronto's as I stated a few posts back, but my HA interface is the iPad/iPhone. There is a wall mounted iPad in each room of the house, and an app on the iPhone that I can use when I need mobility. The wall mount is thinner than standard wallboard so placement is very flexible with a very high WAF.

When I started looking at Pronto alternatives I focused on the iPad and looked at iRule and CommandFusion. I actually started with iRule, but eventually switched to the CommandFusion system consisting of their free guiDesigner system for windows (think PEP) and the IViewer app, a little expensive, for the iPad/iPhone.

The main reason for the choice was that the CF system had a full Javascript engine so I could program fairly involved functionality in a manner very similar to using Prontoscript. I use exactly the same js code for both the iPad and the iPhone, but the graphics and layout are obviously quite different.

At the current time the CF system also operates on Android devices but that is relatively new having some birthing pains

I've been using TouchControl. It is iDevice only with a free PC authoring system. The authoring system is called a "server". This is a somewhat unfortunate name because, while the "server" has some control capability, the "server" does not need to be running while using the iDevices. I was able to reuse most of my Pronto scripts with a few tweaks to accommodate the new environment. Screen editing is quite different from ProntoEdit and there will be an initial shock, however, once you get used to it, working with layouts is much faster than with ProntoEdit.

It's very flexible. iDevices can communicate with each other directly or through the cloud. Most modes of communication that you'll need are intrinsic. For example, I can't think of any fundamental reason why I couldn't create a Sonos controller, but there is no reason to do this because I can call the Sonos controller and the user can 4-finger swipe between applications.

The author is very responsive.

A recent new feature adds access to an online IR code base. Probably, I'm not allowed to divulge its source, but if you've been working in this area for a while, you'll recognize the data. Remote configuration maintenance is supported.

Since the iHardware is so much faster than Pronto, I can be much more aggressive with my scripting without bogging down the user interface. And, if it makes sense, one can define a web button. At this point you can use your full HTML/CSS/DOM skills because the button is simply a Safari window.

There are plenty of client solutions to replace remotes. Folks that adapt the X-1 cable box will probably have to replace their "RF" Pronto unless a solution is found. I've been able to keep the line alive with this X-1 exception. My replacement choice so far has been URC or Elan g! As Nellie has found everything will change.

Hmmm...

I'm sad to see that I missed this particular boat. I bought my TSU9400 years ago. Sadly, it has sat in the cradle since then. I never even got around to programming it. I guess I always found an excuse to put it off. I do remember downloading all the software and I started the design for my screens, but I put it aside once I realized I wouldn't be able to control some of my devices.

Now, with those old devices gone and a little more free time, I came back here looking for the latest software and any updates on the remote's firmware.

QUESTION: Do you guys think it's worth installing the PC software and giving it a go? Or should I sell the remote and go with an app like Roomie?

Keep in mind that my needs are pretty simple.

Devices: Yamaha RX-Z7; Comcast Cable; Panasonic AE3000 Projector, Oppo DVD, PS3, PC

All equipment is in an alcove in my home theater. I don't need an IR distribution system (though I do have an old Channel Master block with a dead power supply).

Give it a go

Hard buttons control is way better than only touch screen experience ..

I'm still using my TSU9400 (I have 3 other TSU9400s for backup, since I now only use the TSU9400 in one room). Having a software development background has helped extend the useful life of my Pronto, since I've been able to use TCP to control my new devices. I'm been thinking about the Control4 Halo Touch, though...

I tried the Roomie remote on my iPhone and was underwhelmed. TouchControl looks interesting. However, if I were to invest some time learning and configuring a new remote, I would like more - a nice configurable GUI touch screen AND hard buttons. So, while iPhone based apps are nice for convenience, I would miss hard buttons too much.
