Hi

My TSU9600 has died. Its completely dead, when placed on the cradle it remains dead and the red charging LED does not come on. The white LED is lit though which would suggest that the cradle and PSU is OK.

Does anyone have any suggestions or should I send it in for repair (Its out of warranty :-(). Does anyone have any experience of the Philips repair process and costs?

Trying to console myself that I might now have a good looking door stop!

Thanks in advance.

Barney

I have a 9400, so your cradle is going to be quite different: I have seen a number of occassions where the red LED does not light up but the unit still charges. Jiggle the little Pronto guy in the cradle and the contact points shift between the cradle and the TSU: Voila the red light comes on.

But it sounds like you have a dead battery..... Lithium Ion batteries are real workhorses; however they do tend to bite the dust hard after about 2 years of good heavy use.

Philips does sell replacement batteries for the TSU's, you should be able to get one through your local distributor or on-line (not through Philips). I'm not sure about the 9600, but the 9400 has a neat little screw on the backplate that if memory serves allows you to access the battery compartment.

PS: I agree with your assumption: If the white LED is coming on then the base is getting power. Thus the TSU should charge in cradle..... Unless there's no Lithium left in the Ion ;-)!

Barney,

I assume that you made sure the power switch on the bottom of the TSU is switched to the "on" position... Just to make sure...

Did the remote quit suddenly, or did it start to fail over time? Was it dropped, blah blah blah...

Hi gopronto, I'm in the UK.

Hi Evohome, yes power switch is on. Battery life seemed OK, but we do tend to operate it from the cradle and thus its not picked up much. Wife went use it (its in daily use) and it was dead :-( We have no kids so 100% it hasnt been dropped by me or the good lady (she would be honest and tell me :-)).

Thanks

Barney

If it's always cradle bound: Your battery has probably died an early death or it needs to be seriously recharged (8hrs +) and conditioned. Lithium Ion batteries need to be used / conditioned or they lose their ability to hold a charge very quickly.

My personal rule with these types of batteries: On receipt of a new L-Ion battery or device using a L-Ion; fully charge it and then run it into the ground and re-charge.

When in regular use, don't keep it on the charger all the time or it won't hold a charge. L-Ion batteries hate being partially charged; this actually reduces battery life.

PS: This is general experience with this type of battery. Philips does recommend that you keep the little guy in the charger stand when not in use; thus guide yourself accordingly.

We just replaced one of our customers TSU9600's main board because it went bad. The unit was about 2-3 years old. It was about $250 to fix from ServiceWide Tech, Philip's authorized servicing company. Anyway, we thought it was originally the battery but it wasn't. Could be the same issue.

Just go to this page, fill out the form and click send. It will give you an RA# and address to send back. I believe they charge $15 or $25 to look at it and give you an analysis of what's wrong. Took about 3 weeks to get it to them, have them fix it, and send it back.

Anyway, I hope this helps.

Sorry, didn't see that you were in the UK. It might be different. You can still contact them to find out though.

I had the same problem with my TSU 9400. the red light of the dock station turning off after one second, and the unit remaining totally discharged.
As it's my third remote of the same model, the first and second were defective because of continuous loss of calibration, this dramatic situation (100% defective products!!! and no pronto maintenance service in France) with a stock of spare parts, gave me the opportunity to run some tests :
- replacing the battery is useless
- the loss of calibration is directly related to the screen
- only replacing the system board solved the charging problem
