I am currently using a TSU1000 pronto and am thinking about changing it for a Dell Axim X3 and PDAwin software. I gather this will emulate a pronto pro.
Are there any pitfalls to using this combination? Do the hard keys work well, can you keep you finger on the Vol+ button for continuous increases in volome? Does the Axim switch off if not in use for a certain amount of time and if so how long does it take to start up and will it start up at the same page where you left it? Sorry for all the questions, I am thinking about treating myself to a new gadget at christmas and dont want to be disapointed. Has anyone changed from a pronto to this combination and been disapointed.
Thanks in advance.

Do not bother.

I had been using a Pronto Pro RU 970 for 2 years, never had any real problems learning codes and replaying them. I changed from RU970 to iPAQ 5450 because girlfriend left with the Pronto, very disapointed with PDA Win software.

Using the iPAQ and Novii remote software, and Nevo remote, I have been able to learn codes from various devices (grundig TV and Mission CD player as examples), and replay thenm so they work. PDAWin can't handle them. Unfortunatly Nevo comes bundled with certain devices and is part of the Consumer IR module in the hardware, and Novii remote is not anywhere near as configerable as pronto ccf files and PDA win .

PDA Win can not handle repeat codes. It seems from the minimal work I have done on it to be an inability to handle the second (repeat) burst pair sequence in pronto format IR hex code sequences

There has been an encouraging response from Novii to a question further down the threads, about macros etc, but that will have to wait.

Have a look back through this forum to see other comments regarding PDA WIn.

I would love to recommend their software. it is just what I and other need. I personally have not tried contacting them, but by all accounts, they do not bother to reply to e-mails you send them.

for serious remote control work stick to the pronto, get a PDA and have a play, but it will not (yet) replace it.

Neil

I agree with npaisnel:

If you have a Pronto TSU1000 functioning well, don't expect the PDAwin to be better (OK it's in colour)

here are my PDAwin experiences:
-it doesen't support repeat codes (WITH THE EXCEPTION OF HARD BUTTONS NAV UP, DOWN,LEFT, RIGHT!)
-it does not have a "macro side" only "device side"
-full functionality only the first 49 devices/panels
(according to me no difference if 49 panels in one device or 49 separate devices)everything above 49 has following drawbacks:
a)no lower hard buttons (like the macro side panels with pronto)
b)panels/devices >49 don't appear on scroll down upper right, but are acessible if you create jump buttons
C) you can't scroll between panels within the same device
-some IR commands work worse than with a "real" pronto

-the pda sends IR only when button is released rather than at contact

So all in all a good combination (good peformance per $), but NOT A FULL SUBSTITUTE IF YOU ALREADY HAVE A PRONTO!
PRONTO has a higher wife acceptance factor (no fiddling around needed) which at least for me is vital...

A Pronto is a rip-off.
Do not listen to these people.
Think for yourself,use common sense.
The people telling you to buy a Pronto probably paid
$700-$1000 for a Pronto Pro.

Why do you say that? Have you used PDA WIn TV remote software and got it to work? If so let us in on the secret

Now I dont know what to do. I already have a pronto and think it is great but it is a bit big and bulky and dare I say it....ugly!!
The dell axim X3 has consumer IR so maybe the software will improve and pda's will become a better alternative to spending hundreds on a colour remote.
Is there any plans to develop software that uses PCF. files for the 3000/7000 pronto's?

Hello,

This will probably be of some interest for you?

http://www.netremote.org/

Check the Forum, Infrared / NRIRServ Discussion area for using NetRemote to control Infrared devices. There has been a "IR -Breakthrough-!"

Ok, I took the plunge and bought a Dell Axim X3 basic and the PDAwin software. I choose the X3 as it is cheap compared to the Ipaq versions and like the ipaq it comes with consumer grade ir built in so no external ir extender is needed.
The good news is the PDA is much smaller and lighter than my pronto TSU2000 and with some tweaks to your ccf file it will operate in much the same manner as the TSU6000.
My biggest worry when buying this unit was the strength of its IR, I dont quite know why but some devices work great from my seating position which is about 13 feet from the tv but other are not so great. For example my Sky digibox(which is what gets used most often) works great and will operate with the PDA pointing in almost any direction (by boucing the ir off walls), my amp, projector, lights and dvd player also work quite well but not quite as good as my sky box but my (cheap UK goodmans tv) tv is very poor and will only operate with the PDA pointed directly at it. The software despite what others have said about it is very good, there are a few nigglig complaints but these can all be gotten around by making a few changes to the ccf file. The only other complaint I have is for some reason the far right button on the X3 isnt mapped to the software and instead the smaller record button is mapped (I have emailed PDAwin but dont expect a reply).
I still have my pronto and will keep it out as I dont want others putting their grubby fingers all aver my PDA but all in all I am very happy with the Axim and now my remote control also displays photos, keeps contacts, appointments, spreadsheets, plays games, recieves emails, surfs the net and plays mp3 files. Definately recomended.

This guy seems to know all about Axim+PDAWin
maybe he can help? He was pretty active in this forum a few month ago. Maybe there is a way around the hard button problem...
