Here's what I got from PDAWin tech support:

"TV remote 5.1 does not support "strong" IR diode of the new iPAQ H5450/H5455 because is "locked" only for Nevo software.
Best regards,PDAwin support team."

So it does not support the "weak" IR diode of the Dell Axim. It does not support the "strong" IR diode of the new iPAQs. I guess it must be "just right" 8-P

Doesn't make sense to me. Can anyone explain?

The Nevo CIR in the iPAQ H39xx & H54xx is a combination of both hardware and software. It's licensed from UEI, the company that sells the One for All and Kamelion remotes. X-10 used to manufacture all of the OFA remotes but I'm not sure who owns the IR database they use.

Currently, no third party software will work with the Nevo hardware. My guess is that the license fees UEI wants are prohibitive for most third party developers.

Third party software uses the IrDA emitter which means range is severely limited.

I imagine that TR's IR dongle would work but you'll have to ask them or check their compatibility list to be sure.

IOW, you're stuck with the Nevo software if you want to use their hardware.

Thank you Dave; your answer makes a lot of sense. I'll check with the TR people and report here.

Re licensing fees: Philips will probably port their ProntoLite siftware to this platform. They must be beginning to feel really uneasy with the new PocketPCs with CIR, color, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi :-)

OTOH I checked with the OmniRemote poeple (Palm soft.): no intention of porting it to PPCs.

Thanks.

No cramp. It's this slow as molasses server that fails to post the message about 50% of the time. It's such a PITA that I think I'll quit wasting my time here.

Just that both Philips and Harmony Remote have announced plans for PPC versions of their software. In their press release Philips mentioned the need to solve the hardware problem. I bet Michael Dell will respond.

As for OmniRemote, Charley is probably happy with the current PalmOS market. I think OR is a small operation. They probably doesn't want to spread themselves too thin.
