I moved this discussion here because the folks on the Prontopro forum just get p'd-off that a superior solution is available. The new Ipaqs will be announced monday, but so far it is clear that they will come embedded with Nevo, the new remote control offering from Universal (see www.mynevo.com).
let's compare specs (ipaq vs. pronto):
processor: intel xscale 400mHz vs. slow motorola 68328.
memory: 64MB SDRM, 48MB Flash vs. 512 SRAM, 8 MB flash.
Display: transflective active matrix 65K colors vs. FSTN 256 colors
IR range: 50 ft vs 33 ft (subject to testing)
batteries; 1400 mAh rechargable Li polymer vs recharg AAA pack.

These are just a few comparative notes on the hardware (not to mention expansion slots, bluetooth wireless, bundled applications, etc... Plus, you don't need a PC to program it!) When compared in this light, the ProntoPro looks obsolete, like that old 512K PC you threw out years ago. Yet the two are similarly priced!

Sounds promising!

They finally resolved the IR range problem without adding any other piece of hardware.

Can you imagine being able to beam your business card to another Ipaq user across the room!

Martin :-)

The details will probably come on Monday, but it appears that the units have dual IR modes. You use the high powered "consumer" mode with Nevo to control the devices. On a business trip, you can keep your contact info, map directions, etc.. AND be able to remotely control that hotel TV and boardroom LCD projector. Also view your webcam homepage to make sure no intruders are stealing your AV equipment while your out! At home, you can browse local TV listings, surf the web, answer email, or play games during the commercials. Besides the major hardware differences, the numerous applications for the IPAQ makes Pronto look like a pretty stupid (or, dare I say, OBSOLETE) device particularly when you consider they are similarly priced.

how can something that is not announced yet already be available? that is one powerful crystal ball

The details will probably come on Monday

even admitting you are not 100% sure of the release date, I am amazed

IR range: 50 ft vs 33 ft (subject to testing)

actually admitting it might need testing, that is open minded :-)

I guess according to you that means imaginary remote 1 Pronto 0 in your comparison.

I'm glad you followed me here tony as you serve as evidence of the typical p'd-off pronto user. Actually most of the specs for the new Ipaq 3900 series are available and posted all over the web. in fact, many companies are taking pre-orders for delivery in a few weeks. Did you not know all about the new color pronto weeks in advance of its release? very common in consumer electronics. HP just plans the official launch on monday. The Nevo remote software comes from Universal Electronics and was officially launched this week....its already out. I demo'd both about a month ago at a computer and electronics show. At the time, I was unable to test the true range of the IR, though the company says it's 50 ft. Even your 35 ft pronto performs variable in different environments with different devices so it too must be "tested" in your own setup. I know a color touchscreen remote with active matrix display, thousands of colors, expandability, world's fastest/most efficient portable processor, wireless cabability and sufficient memory sounds imaginary to a pronto owner, but wake up and smell the coffee....the prontopro contains nothing but obsolete technology (512K, slow processor, old-school display, RS232, .....).

I am not a "typical p'd-off pronto user. " and I did not follow you here. If you do a search you will notice I was visiting this forum since it first started. And I visit the rest of the forums. Like I responded in your thread in the Pronto forum, I am always trying to find something better, either in price or quality. Just because I was not as impressed as you are, it does not mean I am closed minded, just that I am not easily impressed.

Would TV/Remote3.1 benefit from the extended IR range of the new IPAQ or would only the NEVO software be able to make use of it?
