Hi there,

I know that this would have been asked before so please excuse me as I am new to this forum.

I have previously owned a Pronto & have now purchased a ProntoPro. I am not overly wrapped with it & I was wondering how an IPAQ compares?

I would be interested in hearing from people who have used both. I am a bit disapointed with the display on the ProntoPro & feel that the IPAQ screen would be far superior.

Can the IPAQ & its software use more than 256 colors or are you limited as with the ProntoPro? I was thinking about getting the top of the range IPAQ with bluetooth. Is the IR range for this sufficent for practical use? What are the downsides of using a PDA instead of the ProntoPro?

Yes! The IPAQ is much more value for money. And the display of the Pronto Pro really is crap. (I returned mine after a few days).
The range of the IPAQ is really depending of the sensitivity of your Hifi-Equipment. I got at least 2m with mine, using a 3850.
You have the opportunity to get an IR-Extender to boost it. I for myself have modified my IPAQ and the range I have now is more than the Pronto can probvide, but that's something for the fearless. So I recommend an IPAQ first, test the range and if you are not satified get an extender.
Using the TV-Remote-Controller software you nearly have the functionality of the Pronto Pro. The downside of the software is, that the author seems to have stopped developement and I suppose he's rather counting his money.
Nevertheless the ProntoPro is no option any more for me. It's bulky, has a miserable diplay and is hugely overpriced.
Hope this helps

I to have an Ipaq. It has just replaced my old Pronto.

With PDAwin's TV Remote Controller, I can load my existing CCF, and have the same UI.

Wilhelm; I am curious what you did to modify your Ipaq for greater range.

I have klugged together an RF interface from a DSS "LeapFrog" type system I had laying around. It works, but is a little on the ugly side.

Is your solution an internal modification?

Thanks for your input.

John

Yes. I replaced the stereo jack (I never used it anyway) with a 5mm IR-LED and a small Transistor for amplification. It was very fiddely work and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who isn't used to smd-soldering.
