Yesterday I purchased a Sony PEGT615C. I’m still not sure if this was the best choice or not. A lot of people have recommended this, the IPAQ’s, and the Sony 760. I plan on using this as more of a toy then for any business use. The address book, remote idea, mp3, and some games seemed kind of cool for such a small item. I currently own the MX-1000 remote and really like it. I seem to be changing the design of the damn thing more than I’m actually using it tho. I would suspect ill be doing the same with this pda. I would appreciate any advice you guys could throw my way since you kind of have an idea of how I’m using this.

Thanks,

Rarebird

I don't know about what palmtop makes the best remote. But as far as software is concerned the one that looks most impressive (especially for someone that likes messing around) is [Link: pdawin.com]

Anthony,

Thanks for the post. I have been playing with this pda a lot and really like it. That software you mentioned seems really cool; however, you have to have a pc based pda and not a palm based one. What do you think of the omni remote software? I have not downloaded this yet but it seems cool. Was kind of wondering the pros and cons between theese two different software products.

Thanks,

Rarebird

Go to Pacific Neo-Tek's web site (don't have URL handy - do a Google search) and download the BETA version of OmniRemote 1.2 (Build 23). DO NOT get the current release version 1.17 (it doesn't work on the T615 model).

I've been using this software on my PEG T615 for a month now. Although it is beta, it is quite stable (this build is very close to the general release). There is a learning curve, but so far I haven't found anything that I can do with my Pronto or T2 remotes that I can't do with the OR1.2 software: macros, timers, custom bitmaps, etc., etc.

The only problem seems to be that the Palm systems sometimes have trouble learning certain IR codes. The OR software does not automatically recognize the IR frequency in learning. It has a frequency-detection routine you can go through before learning your IR codes, but it only has three or four "built-in" IR frequencies, one of which may or may not match your components (in my case, most of my stuff uses 38khz IR, which is not one of the OR standard choices). You can input a custom frequency, however, if you know what it is, and many remotes will work even off-frequency a bit (e.g., a 38khz remote probably will work at 39.2khz). There is also a way to import hex codes from Pronto files.

Download the software, install it, and then e-mail me with any questions at [email protected] I'm not in any way connected with this company, but I think it is a great product (and only $20 to register).

A great addition to OmniRemote is ORDesktop available at ORDesktop.com.

It allows you to input Pronto hex codes, easily available on this site, and then download them to OmniRemote in your PDA. You shouldn't find too many codes that you won't be able to find in the Pronto area.

It also allows you to set up all of your pages on the PC, which is quite cool.

Check it out!

Ok guys, Omniremote and ORdesktop have been purchased. Have not had to much time to mess around but I do not see a way to design your own buttons or to load pictures as buttons, ie channel icons. Is this possible?
Thanks,

Rarebird

OK. Do you have Version 1.2 [BETA but stable] of Omni Remote? If you do, then open the menu and click on Advanced. You will see a menu selection for "Styles". "Styles" are OR's way of importing bitmaps for all sorts of things - buttons, backgrounds, etc. Unfortunately, I haven't used the Styles function yet myself, but the documentation that comes with Version 1.2 has some instructions on creating styles via bitmaps.

Also, note that OR Desktop was designed to work with OR Version 1.1, NOT version 1.2 -- there are some things you can do in 1.2 that you can't do on OR Desktop - for example, in OR 1.2, you can have multiple lines of text on a button (there are separate entries for button name and button text in OR 1.2; in OR 1.1, you only get "button name" and one line of text). You CAN use OR desktop to do a basic button layout, but you're best advised to use OR 1.2 to tweak that.

I would urge you to visit the Pacific NeoTek message board and review all the messages relating to the Version 1.2 beta, which will give you a better idea of what this software can do.

OmniRemote Pro (www.pacificneotek.com) for the Palm is now out and the 1.2 betas are gone. I have not tested it out yet, but I was very happy with beta 25.
