something like the pronto emulator. I know the emulator wont run stand alone without plugged into the pronto. but with a ir transmitter like the tira. i would lke to have a remote control on my desktop

Ahhhh. So instead of a PC remote, a PC that is a remote. :-)

Certainly doable from a PDA, and there were some laptop-based solutions (although they never seemed to have many features), but I'm not really aware of much else.

I suppose you'd need something like this [Link: innotechsystems.com] combined with an interface...

Meedio HouseBot can remote control just about anything and you can run custom designed graphical interfaces on PCs as well as PDAs.

The forums are quite helpful and there is even a forum for Tira and USB-UIRT devices. You can download the full software for 30 days to try it out. Totally customizeable and can use Pronto CCF files.

CQC is definitely in that category of application, though it is much more than that also. It's a full fledged automation system and definitely one of the things that such systems have to do is to provide IR control over devices along with serial, IP, USB, etc... And to accept incoming IR signals to invoke pre-fab automation logic defined in the automation system.
