Are these type threads okay in this section?
I think as much as guys here go back and forth a lot and disagree, there is still enough mutual respect that they enjoy the conversations. Sometimes I even learn a few things.

As long as it doesn't get nasty.
One of the big issues with those discussions, is that some people are unable to remove "personal" from "discussion", and start to take everything as directed pot shots. Then they fire back slightly harder, and it ends up generating bad feelings between members. So anyone entering into such discussions should realize that what's said in the thread... stays in the thread.
I've actually considered creating a "Boiler Room" forum for exactly this sort of thing.

I have a serious problem with avoiding pointless conversations. Politics, religion IMO are pointless and the "discussion" is really just "i am rubber you are glue".
I vote against a Boiler Room forum and urge everyone (myself included/mostly) to keep those two (at least those two) topics off of remote central.
I would say Control4 and iOS v Android as additional topics to keep off the forum but Control4 is kicking ass and Android will be off mobile devices by the end of the year so its not worth banning it as a subject :).

Sorry, but everyone needs to be able to argue now and then.
Politics? Hell yes!
Religion? Why bother?
Arguments about "things" are good. Making them personal is not.
So....
You're not a D*** for not wanting to argue.... ;-)
