I've always wondered what is considered the best practice when switching to an activity, etc...
Should you switch the HDMI matrix input first, or turn on the device first and THEN switch the inputs?

it really depends on the equipment you are using. hdmi matrices can be funny. but in my experience, it is better to have the source on first, then switch to it.

Yeah, some matrices require a source device to be powered-on before the matrix will even allow you to switch to it. Is that what you are referring to?
The matrices I'm using are usually Gefen (commericial-level) products that allow switching to "off" devices.
I'm confused though because it would seem to make more sense to change the matrix first (essentially "wiring up" the connection) before turning the source device on...

None of my hardware seems to care, so I just keep it practical and start up the slowest thing first. If the gear draws a lot of power when turning on, it can't hurt to stagger the devices with the highest current draw.
