I am trying to update the programming of an MX-850 on a new Win XP PC (not the one it was originally programmed on about a year ago). Unfortunately, as soon as I try to upload the current configuration from the remote I get the following error.

Error detected while communicating with your remote control.
ERROR CODE: 101-07UU-0000
The COM port is being used by another program. Please identify and exit the program that is using the COM port.

I don't understand this error message as the MX-850 editor is set up to use the COM 1 port and the connecting cable is plugged into the COM 1 port. I have also noted that the LCD panel on the remote constantly repeats a sequence of self test results during all the time that the remote is connected to the PC.

Any guidance would be much appreciated.

Close any programs running in the background on the taskbar (Laplink, HotSync, etc.). Those often cause such conflicts and tend to "claim" ports.

Let me know if that helps.

Thank you,

Damon,
I don't have the two products you mentioned specifically, but I closed down almost everything on my taskbar and still the COM1 connection caused me problems. The only taskbar icons left at this stage were for LAN status, a mobile phone connection facility that explicitly does not use COM1 or COM2, an Intellipoint mouse, volume control and USB hardware removal control.

However, switching to COM2 made everything work fine.

I guess that one of a long list of Windows services (all with obscure names) may be the culprit, or perhaps my PC has a faulty COM1 port.

Did you just switch the MX Editor to COM 2 or did you also need to change it in the Windows Device Manager? I'm interested in the details, in case something like this ever happens to anyone else.

Thank you,
Damon DG

Check this thread out: [Link: remotecentral.com]

Post #3 from hiker talks about using msconfig, which is what fixed it for me (I had an old X10 process running and causing the COM error.) Good luck.

Is there any way to find out WHAT is occupying com1 and com2? I took everything off that I can think of and still get the "port used by another device" message.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Go to Device Manager to see what may be occupying Com 1 or 2 (Start --> Control Panel --> System --> Device Manager).

Once in Device Manager view Devices by Connection (on the menu). You should be able to see what device is using Com 1 or Com 2)
