DirecTV RF is proprietary and can't be learned by any existing universal remote. (This isn't unique to DirecTV: the technical hurdles of learning RF are vast.) That's the very reason DirecTV includes IR: to allow universal remotes to control their units. You can use a URC RF base station with your remote to get the no-pointing, through-walls operation you're looking for.
