Here's something most people never think about, having the charging cradles/plugs plugged into a surge protector. The circuitry inside a remote isn't that robust, and a decent surge can take it out while leaving the rest of the house untouched. Do you lights flicker when the AC turns on? Something as small as that can cause damage to sensitive electronics, like a remote or cell phone plugged in to the wall.
