Here is my suggestion:
1. This device can be configured any way you want - sky is the limit.
2. Determine how do you want to control your devices. My "Home" screen has locations (living room, home theater, etc.). Each location has pages filled with functions or events (DVD, relax, dinner, etc.).
3. Once you created your basic structure, create page(s) with buttons for each of them.
4. When all buttons are created you may start the programming. This is the most technical part which you may outsource. At this point programming person is forced to do it the way you want.
