All is good now.
I ended up just resetting to factory default and that
cured it!
I was trying to keep the old configuration just in case
(partially to demo how poor the original programming was)
but I had to ditch it for the reset.
I couldn't see how the usb cables could have been the problem, since they are pretty much standard as I stated.
Glad to see that you solved the problem.
At least the remote is good, and now you can reprogram it.
