Don't own one, but I've used them.

Most people around here (myself included) don't especially care for them, because they offer limited customization. However, they're extremely easy to program. It's basically a walk-through wizard that creates all macros ("activities") and configures the remote for you.

It should be able to do what you want. Control all of your devices fully (DVR included). Since you say you're not great with programming, this is by far the easiest it gets.
