I am tired of having 6 remotes (and losing them), so I am looking into buying an universal remote. I once bought one of those cheaper ones, which only worked for parts of my stuff. Now I got a new DVR that is doesn't work with either. What would you recommend?

Searching around I looked at this:
[Link: logitech.com]

Any input on it?

On digg.com I read this: [Link: x10community.com]

Any helpful input is appreciated.

Thanks.

Budget? Any preferences you have (such as touchscreens)? How easy should it be to program?

Hey, thanks for the reply. I don't want to spend more than $100 - $150. Touchscreen would be nice, but not really needed. Big buttons however would be cool, I hate the tiny buttons some remotes have. I am not really great with computers or programming a remote, so the simpler the better.

I read that for the logitech I have to use a PC to program it???

I also got an email from that iconremote blog. They actually have a page up now and a knowledge base. Sounds actually very good to me, but they don't have a price yet. With the features they advertise it's probably out of my price range...

Hi KaiA,

Thanks for the info. Funny thing I actually was inquiring about this guy too.... Someone had mentioned it to me previously, so it kind of piqued my itnterest.

Of course, it all comes down to what this thing can do and how much it's going to put a dent in the wallet....

thanks for the info!

One of the Harmony remotes would work fine for you.

I've been using the X10 iconRemote for awhile. I absolutely love it to pieces! The buttons are big, the favorite channels feature is awesome, and the set up Wizard was a piece of cake. You don't need to hook this one to a computer like you do with the Harmony.

Do you own one? Can you say a bit more?

Thanks

Don't own one, but I've used them.

Most people around here (myself included) don't especially care for them, because they offer limited customization. However, they're extremely easy to program. It's basically a walk-through wizard that creates all macros ("activities") and configures the remote for you.

It should be able to do what you want. Control all of your devices fully (DVR included). Since you say you're not great with programming, this is by far the easiest it gets.

Thanks for the update. I actually called X10 about the iconremote, and ended up ordering one. I also ordered 2 components that will allow me control not only my tv etc, but the lights too. If that all works, that would surely be impressive...Turn on everything, and have lights dimmed...yeah...

I write more when I tested it.

Hello all! Wow, interesting that I stumbled across this forum-- I actually didn't know if anyone else knew about X10 besides me. Anywho, I managed to get a hold of the iconremote, and I just figured I'd share a bit of my experience with the remote with you.

Before I got my remote, I was looking around too, and Logitech was the name that kept coming up. Great remotes, but if you're not too much into computers, they can seem a little intimidating-- at least they did to me.

The iconRemote is great because you don't need a computer to get it setup. It's easy to use, it's reasonably priced, and you get all the cool bells and whistles that you get with a lot of the Logitech remotes. If ease of use is something your concerned with, then definately check the iconremote out.

Harmony most likely uses PC based programming to make programming easier, not harder.

i have to agree with the above statement- my current Nevo SL was much easier to program via PC than my previous $90 RCA non PC universal.

Let me know what you think of the icon remote when you get yours. I'm also on the market for a remote control, and for the most part, I'm confused about what I read here. I'm not a very technically-minded person, so I don't understand concepts such as Jp1. So far, this icon sounds like the least complicated of the bunch, so let me know what you think.
