Haven't tried your approach, but I have many buttons that are programed to switch to specific channels. For example, if I want a button to go to channel 341, I link to the digits for the device but I don't mess with combining the codes in any way in the panel:
Link IR codes, Sat Num Pad, Digit 3
Link IR codes, Sat Num Pad, Digit 4
Link IR codes, Sat Num Pad, Digit 1
Link IR codes, Sat Num Pad, Enter
This seems to work nicely for me.
