Groups are under the Layout menu in PENG. They are used to group together objects so you can move them, copy them etc as one object.
Groups are used a lot for keypads. You can select all 10 by using ctrl and clicking each one and then choose group from the Layout menu and now all 10 are controlled like a single object.
Nice feature too bad it's bugged.
Why are they causing your 3000 to crash? Because it's a bug, not much more than that they just don't work like they are supposed to.
