Did you do the typical Windows Vista upgrade or the custom upgrade? The custom upgrade is where you can have setup copy your files to c:\windows.old and do the equivalent of a clean install.
It could be that your ProntoEditPro NG install had become corrupt and uninstalling it still left garbage in the registry that you needed to weed out before reinstalling. If Vista replaced Windows XP instead of upgrading it then you got a clean registry to start with.
