you are exactly right, the latter. I have connected a slink-e ir emmitter to my main pc in the bedroom and this in turn transmits via ir repeaters to the desired location.
the total price was all inclusive, i got my progear for a great price off ebay.
However i am not recommending this as the cheapo route instead of the ipronto, this does EVERYTHING the ipronto does but better.

higher resolution web surfing.
unlimited backgrounds including annimated and custom buttons.
full remote desktop for unlimited number of pcs. mobile monitor.
