I think the AC remote actually send the set point to the AC unit, not just an up or down command. With my de longhi unit, I can change the temp setting on the remote whilst it is hidden from the AC unit, and then press the up button on the remote with the unit in range and the unit sets to the correct temperature.
Same applies to setting on off times, mode, fan and vane setting
